A Washington state biosurveillance firm raised the first warning about a possible outbreak of swine flu in Mexico more than two weeks before the World Health Organization offered its initial alert about a public health emergency of international concern.

Both federal and international health officials had access to the warning from Veratect. Later e-mails calling attention to the company’s subsequent report that the disease was possibly spreading in Mexico were sent to 10 officials of the Centers for Disease Control, said Robert Hart, the company’s chief executive.

Hart said he wasn’t sure why health officials didn’t act sooner.

Oh, I’m sure they’ll think of some excuse that doesn’t “Stop the Buck” in the Oval Office.

When will people learn that the larger the government entity, the more responsibility they have, the bigger they can screw up and effect their lives?

That is what our Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is demanding we do. Though the AP won’t tell you that directly.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says it is “implausible, if not impossible” that North Korea will return to international talks on ending its nuclear ambitions.

Clinton’s pessimistic response came during a Senate hearing Thursday as she was asked why the Obama administration is requesting money for aid to North Korea.

Letting greenhorns run the free world is expensive.

We’re with Stupid

I guess that they decided that Washington state is on enough stupid lists

Washington voters favored Al Gore for president in 2000, and so did a majority of U.S. voters. Yet George W. Bush was sworn in as president because he won the Electoral College vote.

It was the fourth time in history that an elected president didn’t win the popular vote.

Under a bill signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Chris Gregoire, Washington will pledge its 11 Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote. Washington joins a small but growing compact of states including Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey that allocate their votes that way.

The chairman of the nonprofit group National Popular Vote, John Koza, who wrote a book titled “Every Vote Equal,” was at the Capitol to witness the signing. The law means 61 electoral votes nationwide now will go to the popular-vote winner, almost one-quarter of the way to 270 electoral votes, the majority needed to activate the compact.

So far, only 61 Electoral College votes have been pledged to this idiocy. Let us all hope it stays that way.

One stupid list we’re not on but should be is the list in Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act

The so-called “guts” of the law require jurisdictions in nine states — Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia — and portions of seven other states to get Justice Department clearance for any changes in the way elections are conducted.

This case was in front of the Supremes yesterday. Hopefully, it will be seen as prejudicial and tossed on its ear. It clearly misses that any state, even (and especially) those “True Blue” states like mine who are engaging in monkey business.

Pierce County Auditor Jan Shabro has asked the County Council for permission to scrap poll voting for the August primary and November general election.

The move would save the auditor’s office $150,000 at a time when it’s cutting its budget and trying to avoid layoffs. Shabro said the move is for this year only and she is not proposing to permanently eliminate poll voting.

I left King County in the hopes of not having to worry about this crap again. Yet, only five months into my residency, here comes someone trying to make me vote by mail “for the greater good”.

After the settlement Stephen Sharkansky got out of the county along our northern border, Washington should have been added to the list.

It is official

EcoSocialism is a religion, and Al Gore is its prophet.

I may have made that last bit up. But not the first part.

An executive sacked from a giant property company can claim he was unfairly dismissed because of his “philosophical belief in climate change”, a judge ruled yesterday.

In the first case of its kind, employment judge David Sneath said Tim Nicholson, a former environmental policy officer, could invoke employment law for protection from discrimination against him for his conviction that climate change was the world’s most important environmental problem.

That conviction amounted to a philosophical belief under the Employment Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulations, 2003, the judge ruled on a point of law at a pre-hearing review of an employment tribunal in London.

So now a question for you legal scholars (and wannabes): First, let us assume that this has arrived in America. Can a corporation have a “religion”? Or, is it possible that they could be found civilly liable for discriminating against a non-believer in Gaia-Worship? If, say, my employer fired me because I didn’t believe in Anthropomorphic Global Warming, could I sue them for wrongful termination?

Not that there is any current pressure from management, but there have been some close calls in the past that will very likely pop up again when times aren’t so lean.

Hoowah!

Rep Tom Rooney (R-Florida) has included language on the Dems ignorant “Hate Crimes” expansion bill to include members of the armed forces.

Good for him.

Do I think that “Hate Crimes” legislation is necessary?

Not ever.

Do I think that members of the military need to be included as a protected class like the others contained within the insipid “Hate Crimes Legislation”?

No. “You’re gay, you need special laws to protect you.” is just as insulting as “You’re a Marine, you need special laws to protect you.”

So why do I support this idea in theory?

Because it is making the leftosphere absolutely apoplectic (one example).

They know that their divide and conquer ideas will be undermined by this legislation. They cannot bear the the thought of someone outside of the already “chosen” classes being protected by legislation they supported.

And they absolutely cannot stand the idea that they might be able to be charged with a crime for the things they say about members of America’s military on a daily basis.

Murtha would be paying heavy fines.

The dKos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo would be shut down as a “Hate Site”, as would HuffPo.

Code Pink would be under surveilance for their ongoing “Hate” activities in Berkeley and outside of Walter Reed and would eventually gain equality with the Westboro Baptist Church.

There are a large number of people on this committee. Click here to see if there is anyone you know on it. Call them. Demand this be included on principle.

The Senate is now considering it as well. Here is the list of those members.

The government covers for criminals

And this one isn’t even a politician

Jacob Galuak finished paying for his groceries and was getting change from the cashier when the man behind him in line swiped his wallet.

The suspect then used his own EBT food stamp benefit card to pay for his groceries and walked out the door.

At first, local authorities thought the man had made a mistake by using the card because they could identify him with it.

But West Fargo police have spent the past year clashing with the Department of Human Services over obtaining the man’s identity.

The agency says it’s only following the law by not releasing it.

“If a food stamp or a SNAP client was involved in alleged illegal activity, we cannot in a majority, or I’ll say all cases, disclose any information based on federal law,” said Jonathan Alm, an attorney with the department.

The department believes in cooperating with law enforcement and other agencies, but still has to comply with federal and state laws, Alm said.

Federal law prohibits the department from releasing information about a person using the food stamp program unless there is a violation of the program, Alm said.

Well, fuck. I’d say larceny while using the card is a violation. But I’m sure that someone in that office thinks it was just affirmative wealth redistribution.

Want to clear the room of this bullshit?
Step 1: Find the highest ranking person who can authorize the release of the necessary information.

Step 2: Jail them when they refuse.

Step 3: Repeat with the next person on the list of qualified persons.

Make them defend this insipid idea in a court of law.

He wears lifts, so I guess we could say he’s just “lifting” it from Obama

Barack Obama’s offer of a hand of friendship to Iran after 30 years of hostility may have met with a sceptical public response from Tehran. But now a rapprochement of sorts may be under way amid evidence that the US president’s can-do electioneering tactics have struck a chord with his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Obama’s signature campaign slogan, Yes We Can, has been replicated by the Iranian president in a promotional video issued for Iran’s presidential poll on 12 June, when Ahmadinejad is seeking re-election.

The video features a cover picture of Ahmadinejad wearing his trademark white jacket and pointing to the Farsi phrase Ma Mitavanim (We Can) on a blackboard. The film is aimed at students and capitalises on his former status as a university lecturer.
