Let’s see, I struck out completely at the Town Hall, I mean “Gun Show”. I got no decent offers on what I’d brought, but got a half-assed offer on a pistol I didn’t bring. Next month’s show happens while I’m at the GBR, so October then.

I did hear an unfamiliar voice say mine name, but before I could turn around and see who it was I got bumped by someone walking by and I think I may have just grunted at whomever said it while recovering my balance. If that was you, my apologies.

Three letters in a four-letter word have been replaced with asterisks on a Kurt Cobain monument near an Aberdeen bridge where the late Nirvana frontman spent time when he was growing up.

The donated granite monument in the unofficial park in Cobain’s honor features quotes from lyrics. One was an unedited version of “drugs are bad for you, they will (blank) you up.”

Because you wouldn’t want someone with first hand knowledge of the subject matter to get his point across using language that might offend a possible future junkie.

Weekend Update

In good news, the good folks at Lucky Gunner Ammo have taken the place of the PayPal bigots if you would like to buy more raffle tickets to win the Para GI 1911.

I’m going back to the monthly Town Hall meeting, and by that I mean a gun show: Centralia @ the SW Washington Fairgrounds.

I should have announced it earlier this week so that any and all who wanted to meet up could do so, but this week’s been a PITA and the abuse of the Tea Party members has taken center stage. I’ll be there until around noon. Look for a tall dork wearing a black, white and red pearl buttoned shirt and Remington baseball hat trying to find 62grain 5.56 that doesn’t say “First Born” on the price tag.

And that’s about it. I’ll be back tomorrow with something utterly absurd, but funny and something funny, but not absurd. Have a good day, y’all.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

Hurray! the recent 7-year bond auction was “successful,” keeping confidence high in the markets. Why, it was so successful, in fact, that gosh, the Federal Reserve decided a week later to quietly buy back about half of it.*

Gee, it couldn’t possibly be that the auction was only half as “successful” as advertised, and that the other half was just a short-term purchase arranged by the Fed and Treasury to make it look like there’s more demand than there really is. No, that would be a sign of desperation.

Note a contrary view here — basically that despite doing this, Bernanke has continued to reduce the size of the Fed’s balance sheet by eliminating other activities, so overall it’s okay. I think that misses the point.

* yes, I know that it’s the Treasury that sold the bonds, and the Fed is separate from the Treasury, so technically it wasn’t buying anything “back.” But come on.

Dude, I got nuthin’

I just can’t get over how, on the first day the Democrats start packing their Town Hall meetings with union members, violence breaks out.

Kenneth Gladney, 38, a conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was awaiting treatment for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack.

I mean really, who’d a thunk it?

Karen Miracle pushes Barry Osteen, right, who was debating her husband, Garry. “We have the best health care system in the world and I’m completely happy with what we have,” Osteen said.

Shocking!

I do love how the leftist blogs are obtusely describing the altercations atthese meetings but not saying who are the ones doing the pushing and shoving. Why should they give their readers too much information so that those readers could make an informed comment when it is just as easy to let them imagine what actually happen?

So, if you’re going to attend a Town Hall meeting with your elected representative, take a cool temper and a camera.

Me, I get stuck with a state full of cowards who only want to have Telephone Town Hall meetings, where they can control the callers and the questions. Even Reichert (R), who is afraid of getting called on the carpet for his yes vote on the Cap & Tax is doing his via telephone.

Oh well, I gotta go see the gunsmith anyway.

The Soundboard: Going through boxes Edition

Last week I mentioned to The Wife that the recently updated edition of 1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die, by Tom Moon, was on the shelves and to keep an eye out for it for me. Sure enough, while she was wandering the WalMart, there it was.

That was easily one of the worst ideas I’ve had this summer. Not because it’s a crap list, but because as soon as I realized it was in the house I spent the next three hours pouring through it.

It ends up being 1108 recordings, with the inclusion of a “108 Recordings to Know About” list. 1108 recordings is a lot more than you’d think. The guy has a heaping helping of “Classical” and “World Music” genre tracks, so if you wean it down to recordings you’ll listen to more than a handful of times in your life time, you can probably make the list work with about half the book.

Now, after said pouring, it turns out that I own 21.8% of the 1108 list. Which would be sad except that there is probably another 10% or so that I blame my own sheer incompetence for not also owning and which I will be remedying in short order.

However, the man does leave a goodly number of exceptions off the list that I have no way to remedy other than to post them here. The most glaring exception is the lack of the Substance album by New Order.

Sure, he’s got Unknown Pleasures (by Joy Division) on the list, but c’mon. If you wanted your teeth kicked in musically in 1987, that was the double album to purchase.

RNS Quote of the Day: 08/06/09

Today is the 64th anniversary of the dropping of a nuclear weapon over Hiroshima by the Enola Gay.

A group of “Peace at any cost” types from the PacNW are heading to Japan to apologize for the actions ordered by then President Harry Truman. Actions that all sane individuals know ended World War II more quickly and with much less loss of human life than the land invasion proposed at the time would have.

I have heard multiple times about how the Japanese school system is one of the most excellent educational systems in the world, except for one area: Their nation’s actions during World War II.

I am beginning to think that they may have noticed the criticism.

I think those people in Tacoma are wonderful and modest because they will visit Japan to ask forgiveness although it was Japan that started the war. Japan should visit your country and apologize first. In any war, both countries have to be responsible for the results. I think this visit will be a good chance to forgive each other and make a better relationship.

That young lady is a junior high level student attending public school in the city of Hiroshima.

From the specimens I have seen wandering the commercial businesses of my little corner of America, I don’t even a bare majority of our junior high students could get the decade in which WWII occured right if given a multiple choice answer question.

I’m not talking about Orwell’s book. I’m talking about the Kremlin’s book.

Two nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines have been patrolling in international waters off the East Coast for several days, in activity reminiscent of the Cold War, defense officials said Tuesday.

U.S. Northern Command would not comment on the Russian submarines’ movement. But in a prepared statement, Northern Command> spokesman Michael Kucharek acknowledged the patrols and said the U.S. has been monitoring the two submarines.

Two senior U.S. officials, however, said the submarines had been patrolling several hundred miles off the coast and so far had done nothing to provoke U.S. military concerns. The officials provided details on condition of anonymity in order to discuss intelligence reports.

While the incident raises eyebrows, it did not trigger the more intense reaction by the U.S. military that Russia prompted when two of its bombers buzzed an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific in February 2008. U.S. fighter planes intercepted the two Russian fighters, including one that flew directly over the USS Nimitz twice at an altitude of about 2,000 feet.

That’s funny right there!

On today’s call with reporters, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele took credit for the RNC’s response to a new Democratic National Committee ad asking voters to call Republicans and tell them to stop ginning up town hall heckling. The RNC redirected these calls from its main switchboard over to the DNC’s switchboard — a response, said Steele, to the White House arrogantly blaming regular Americans “like my mother, like my sister” for the health care impasse.

“I thought it was a good idea,” Steele said. “Don’t sit there and think you’re going to direct a bunch of angry liberals to call the RNC when I know full well what that’s all about. I get the joke. My response was, talk to your own party, because they’re the ones ginning this up.”

Gooooooaaaal!

Where ya goin’?

The Democrats want to know.

A  bill up for consideration in the U.S. House seeks to change the way highway users are taxed to fund transportation.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-OR, introduced a bill that would establish a federal pilot program to study vehicle miles traveled, or VMT, as a possible supplement to or possible replacement for the current per-gallon fuel tax. The bill, HR3311, does not specify what would happen to the fuel tax if a VMT program were established.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association believes that although a VMT tax has captured the imagination of some, it remains unproven, even as states like Blumenauer’s home state of Oregon continue to study it.

“The current system of levying federal taxes on trucks is as discriminatory as it can be to small business, and harmful, but there are lots of unanswered questions with a VMT. And those questions need to be resolved before we start launching down that path,” OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer told Land Line.

Blumenauer is calling for the establishment of working groups to study technology – possibly a GPS system – and other factors that would go along with a federal VMT program.

I think it’ll be funny, if this should ever come to pass, when my assigned GPS units mysteriously get attached to the charter boats that dock in Westport.
