Man’s best friend

Indeed.

An 89-year-old man who lay injured in the rain for two days after his ATV overturned says his big black dog protected him from circling cougars.

Raymond Orr’s niece Sue Schofield tells KIRO-TV that her uncle was riding his four-wheeler on his property near Centralia earlier this week when he hit a log and crashed. He broke several bones and was helpless until relatives found him Thursday.

Orr says his dog Jake saved him from cougars.

Erik Olson of the Riverside Fire Authority confirms that Orr said cougars had appeared and the dog fended them off. Olson says paramedics were initially skeptical — until they saw the cougar tracks near the spot where Orr had been stranded.

Pinned and injured food is their favorite. Loud and angry food with bared teeth is not.

The predators in the human world are no different from those in the animal world. Go heavy.

Found at Cowboy Blob’s place, where you should watch the video of the “Barb’s Revenge” stage at the Michigan ACTS match he participated in.

Boots Bob. Always have boots in the truck. Or at least some high traction hiking shoes.

If I’d have designed the stage, there’d have been a req for a radio call before the buzzer and that you had to maneuver the sand sled into a barrel enclave and then engage various poppers from behind the next set of barrels while waiting for your “ride”.

Oh, and a prone shot at the stairstep barrier.

FYI, I’ve had folks go prone in a full-to-the-brim kiddie pool surrounded by sandbags before they could engage “the mover”. If you don’t like your equipment to get wet/muddy/sandy or the possibility of you, quite literally, shitting yourself because of a simulation, don’t let me design the stage.

I may not be the hippest cat on the block anymore

But I’m nowhere near as lame to the lingo as Oliver Willis (Occupation: Toole)

What subliminal message do you see imprinted upon this shirt?

Anyone who is above the age 15 and an IQ higher than 15 sees a suggestion to throw the guy out.

The Toole sees a suggestion to assassinate President Si se Puede.

And while you’d think he’d be roundly informed of his stupidity in the comments section, but no. His sycophants make up anything they can to confirm his lunacy. Folks who aren’t “Tongue to the Bung” for Obama stop by with actual facts and links and the like, but that doesn’t seem to matter to them.

A blast from the past

Remember earlier this week when Megan Mcardle spoke about how everything is rationed based on cost.

Well, if you don’t mind clicking on a link to the leftist Crooks & Liars blog, you can hear Milton Freidman making the same point in 1956, which seemed to break the mind of those around him.

They’re just now figuring this out

Don’t call them slow. It’s just that their base philosophy hinders their judgment.

I speak, of course, of the media

It sounds like such a good deal.

Devise a program that takes gas-guzzling older cars and trucks off the road while simultaneously stimulating sales of new cars. Give federally supported inflated credits for trade-ins. Spend $1 billion, or $3 billion, and Greater Detroit will live again.

The only problem is, say independent used car dealers, the program is eliminating the supply of moderately priced vehicles – transportation cars, go-to-work cars, survival cars.

Clunkers maybe, but those clunkers have long supported a niche among dealers and a niche among buyers.

Fewer cars means higher prices. Fewer cars means tougher times. The unintended consequence of the “Cash for Clunkers” program is taking the used-car business into waters perhaps as choppy as those faced by new car dealers at the height, or the depth, of the latest recession.

“It’s harder to find the cars we’re looking for – under $10,000,” said Gary Johnson Jr., whose family owns GT Auto Sales on South Tacoma Way. “It’s harder to replace them. They’re not getting traded in to the new car dealerships. We’re not getting the trade-ins, and we’re not getting them at auctions.”

I’ve seen this point brought up by folks such as myself at sites across the leftosphere.

The reaction from leftists is either “So what.” or “Tough shit.”

Part of the lack of empathy seems to come from their belief that the people who can’t afford a new “green” car should just be riding public transportation. The other group splits it between that and their disbelief that someone would want a used car.

I actually got one guy to admit that his first car was bought for him, new from the dealer, by his parents. When I explained that that just doesn’t happen to everyone, he acted stunned. I was waiting for an accusation along the line of “parents who wouldn’t buy their children a new car just don’t love them enough to buy them a safe, modern car”.

My first car cost $800 in 1988. I talked the guy down from $1000. If you try to buy below $2k these days in the Seattle metro area you’re lucky if the thing will run long enough to get it home/to the shop and it sure as shit won’t pass the state’s emissions testing.

I pity the kids whose first year of getting to drive to school will be the 2009/2010 school year. Their selection will be diminished and they’ll get less for their dollar. Ain’t government great!

We’re the Government: We don’t care. So you have to.

Lists

I do like me some lists.

One of my favorites as of late is the Top Ten Ways Not to Survive over at The Survivalist Blog.

The only one I really need to work on is #3.

As for #8, if you’re interested in David and my’s ideas on the topic, you should look into the RNS By Ourselves, For Ourselves series here. Just read, scroll and then click at the bottom for the past posts. It’s a real easygoing guide with lots of suggestions and no “beliefs”.
David has been doing the updating for that catagory as of late, but I’m working on a few things currently. Especially since I’ve finally become a homeowner.

Security Theater Stinks

Like poop!

The 47 passengers aboard Continental Express Flight 2816 flying from Houston to Minneapolis expected their flight to last about two-and-one-half hours. But severe weather and an equally severe enforcement of federal regulations caused their flight to take about 12 hours, including a six-hour stretch trapped in the plane as it sat 50 yards from the terminal. Flight 2816 left Houston at 9:23 p.m. on August 7. It was scheduled to arrive in Minneapolis by midnight, but bad weather forced it to land in Rochester. At first, it seemed as if the flight would resume when the storm let up, but by 2:00 a.m. the storm had instead picked up, and passengers were still in the plane.

By this time the situation was getting very uncomfortable. The one toilet had overflowed, babies were crying, dirty diapers were accumulating, and no food or drink had been provided since the snacks that had been dispensed early in the flight. Sleep was virtually impossible aboard the relatively small 50-passenger plane. “It was almost a surreal quality that kind of developed during the night,” passenger Link Christin said. “It felt like you were trapped in a cave underground.”

Finally, at 6:00 a.m., the passengers were allowed to enter the terminal, where the restrooms and vending machines that could have made the long wait more bearable were readily available. What changed at 6:00 a.m.? Security screeners were back on the job and could now screen the passengers before re-boarding.

And some people want to give these freaks control over our health care?

“Yes, Mr. Smith, I understand you’re having an acute myocardial infarction. But I’m on my lunch break, so could you keep it down?”

Government: We don’t care, so you have to.
