So now comes the news that 54% of Americans would rather Congress do nothing, zero, nada, zip, zilch, about health care insurance reform than pass any of the bills currently being floated.
And yet, the 64 members of the House Progressive Caucus, have pledged to not vote for any plan that doesn’t have a government option, are still under the impression that without their approval, nothing will get passed. Her Hate-filled-ness, Jane Hamsher, even did some 3rd grade math over at her FireDogLake blog on the topic.
She left out the Republicans, of course.
If the bill comes out with a ban on canceling coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions, some moderate tort reform on the topic of malpractice suits, and make insurance transportable between states and jobs, then there is no reason for Republicans to not vote for that.
This morning the anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan — the woman who spent so much time leading well-publicized protests outside President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas — announced that she will demonstrate next week at Martha’s Vineyard, where President Obama will be vacationing. “There are several things that we wish to accomplish with this protest on Martha’s Vineyard,” Sheehan said in a statement.
Oh, you mean this happened yesterday? I don’t remember hearing about it. Do you?
Do you remember what those folks who had damn near nothing after Hurricane Katrina and ended up in Houston did with the cash cards handed out by the government?
A state program that put $200 cash into the hands of low-income parents of school-age children is opening the door for “rampant” fraud and should be suspended, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks said Thursday.
The program has caused stores and ATMs to run out of cash and the county’s Human Services Department to be overwhelmed with in-person client visits and calls to its phone system.
Members of Gov. David Paterson’s administration defended the program, saying tales of increased sales of video game equipment and televisions are just anecdotes. The program allows families who couldn’t otherwise afford back-to-school supplies to equip their children for a new year.
What’s clear is that the actual amount of fraud will never be documented because state officials said there is no way for them to see how families are spending the $200-per-child benefit.
And that is exactly how they wanted it.

If you wanted to meet with your junior Senator, Barbara Boxer, to discuss your feelings on the topic of health care, you should have been in the town of Marin last Wednesday.
She was signing copies of her book and I’m sure you might have been able to ask her a question or two before security hustled you out the door.

The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country’s health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.
Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country – who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting – recognize that changes must be made.
“We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize,” Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.
“We know that there must be change,” she said. “We’re all running flat out, we’re all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands.”
They’re realizing that they’re running out of other people’s money.
Well, not so much “running out”. More along the lines of needing to take more money from other people to pay for it but knowing that doing so will cause a revolt.
Big Pharma and Big Insurance want Obama-style health-care reform?
It’s not so hard to understand. “The drug makers stand to gain millions of new customers,” the Times said.
And from the Journal: “If health legislation succeeds, the [insurance] industry would likely get a fresh batch of new customers. In particular, many young and healthy people who currently forgo coverage would be forced to sign up.” No wonder insurers are willing to stop “discriminating” against sick people. (Forget that the essence of insurance is discrimination according to risk.)
Not that Big Pharma and Big Insurance like every detail of the Democratic plan.

In actual shootings, citizens do far better than law enforcement on hit potential. They hit their targets and they don’t hit other people. I wish I could say the same for cops. We train more, they do better.
Citizens have fewer opportunities for mistakes and, as a rule, we know it.
Also, most of the training LEO’s do is unrealistic. Even the Seattle PD and the three nearby Sheriff’s Departments training programs for non-specialized (aka: SWAT, Narc units) is frighteningly lacking. I have and still do shoot with LEO’s as friends and against them as competitors and all that ever did is hammer home to not rely on a LEO to save my life.
At the age of fourteen I was lucky enough to get to shoot an IPSC match with the pistol team my father was a member of at the Washington State Patrol indoor range against a pistol team from SW Washington and the WSP team. Our nine versus the other team’s eight versus nine Troopers.
Not one Trooper placed in the Top 10. Being young and quick on my feet, I placed ninth.
With improvements in the economy and only a fraction of the stimulus money having been spent so far, most Americans — 72 percent — say returning the unused portion of the $787 billion dollar stimulus to taxpayers would do more to boost the economy than having the government spend it. Majorities of Democrats (59 percent), Republicans (87 percent) and independents (70 percent) think the money should be returned to taxpayers.
So now get ready to be called “greedy”.
Also, the politicians will never point out that most of that money hasn’t been printed yet and is completely imaginary. The Demos will continue with the “greedy” line of attack and the Repubs will stay quiet on that fact while they “fight” for it to be returned so as to not “let the people down”.

In Town Hall news, if you’re a Democrat in a district that went for McCain, publishing the schedule of a Town Hall meeting place and time and then canceling said meeting when it looks as though you won’t be able to snow the attendees over isn’t a very bright idea. Especially if a 2010 challenger for your seat has already announced himself.
Rep. Giffords canceled her town hall in Sahuarita/Green Valley, AZ and, her Republican challenger, scheduled an appearance in the same venue at the same time and place. From the looks of the video below it was very successful. Both sides were allowed to speak for two hours and with no problems. You would think that a 2 term congresswoman could manage to put on a town hall during the one month August recess.
You should read some of the comments there. They actually got answers to their questions from someone who seems have actually read the bills, even though he is “just” a private citizen (Psst! Republican challengers, this is an example to follow).
And lastly, with the storm and stress exuding from the left over “The Mobs” at these meetings, it is a bit of a surprise to see the White House dropping a truth nugget like this
There has been no increase in the number of security threats to President Barack Obama despite the contentious town hall meetings taking place around the country, according to the White House.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs also said Friday there has been no change in the security precautions.
“We haven’t viewed any increase in threats, and there’s been no change in any of that,” Gibbs said.
Open carry is not a threat. Stupid signs are not a threat. The Treasury boys know threats. Those two things get eye rolls.
