And they want us to pay for it.
It seems that our current administration thinks that unskilled labor needs to be paid above what they’re worth, under the guise of a “Living Wage”. Because we have so much extra cash lying around, don’t you know.
The White House is looking at a new policy that would give an advantage in bidding on government contracts to companies that offer generous benefits and good pay.
But business groups opposing the idea maintain it would shut out smaller businesses from competing for more than $500 billion a year in federal contracts and increase government procurement costs.
The policy is known as “high road” contracting and could draw the Obama administration into a larger debate over whether the government should use public purse strings to strengthen the middle class and promote higher labor standards.
Advocates of the plan include unions. They say too many jobs financed by government contracts come with low wages and limited benefits and support companies that violate employment laws.
When asked for evidence of that last claim, they promptly ended the press conference.
I might have made that last bit up. But only because the media never bothered to ask for evidence.
One thing I’ve noticed about the left is that whenever they describe a non-entity as “Living”, it means they want to kill it. The “Living” Constitution, is an example. They want to put so much “Life” into it that it’ll be dead soon thereafter.
In Illinois, at Northwestern University, students and faculty are demonstrating to demand a “Living Wage” for the campus’ unskilled laborers.
More than 320 students, faculty and community members gathered Wednesday afternoon to demonstrate for sub-contract workers’ rights at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
According to the Daily Northwestern, the university pays nearly all of its sub-contract workers in food and janitorial services between $9 and $11 an hour. The living wage for Cook County, in which Northwestern sits, is $13.23.
I’ll make them a deal that will give them everything they’re demanding.
They all need to sign a petition stating their demand for this higher wage. Instead of the usual info needed on a petition form, I’ll just need their names and their Employee ID number or their Student ID number.
Then, once we figure out the total dollar amount of how much it’ll cost to increase the wages of the unskilled laborers, we’ll divide it up equally among the 320 or so people who showed up for the rally. Either taking it out of their paychecks or tacking it onto their tuition.
Sounds fair to me.
Little Billy and Suzie need to arrive at the realization that the money will have to come from somewhere. If they want to be that somewhere, then more power to them. But 99 times out of 100, they don’t. So fuck ’em.
