Advice for Holiday Gatherings — Be Tolerant of Your Green Relatives

Those of you, like me, with granola-chewing relatives you’ll be encountering for the holidays might find it useful to simply categorize what we know to be misguided understanding of economics, science, and logic as, rather, a religious belief system. For example, here’s a liturgical tract:

Amen.

When you think of this sort of thing as religious belief, suddenly it’s not as big a deal to accept it in your loved ones. Seriously, it’s worked quite well for me as I’ve watched my daughter explore different…belief systems as she matures. If she finds meaning in it, and chooses to organize her life around it, how can I as a father object?

Their insistence that their religious practices are grounded in reality is, of course, a tenet of all religions that nonbelievers need not share.

But I ain’t gonna begrudge them their attempts to proselytize it, or practice their faith.

Just a helpful note for the holidays!

WTF is wrong with the USAF?

For those not in the Pacific NW, the whole USAF Tanker brouhaha might not seem like much, but it’s a big deal up here. Especially since the USAF seems to have a serious case of the hates for Boeing, so much so that they are willing to rig the competition in favor of EADS, even though EADS is offer a product that does not meet the requirements.

I understand that there is some bad history between the USAF & Boeing, but this is not rational.

Also, this is not an Obama issue, they were doing this crap when Bush was in office. Also, the Navy just got down requesting & approving the Poseidon, the new Anti-Sub plane based on the 737 airframe. Nope, this is just the Air Force looking to make sure that their next tanker is built by a country that just loves to play politics with our military hardware, and operations (we often get denied basing & overflight rights from France, as well as official protests of our military ops, even when we have a solid case for military intervention).

Lagasse’s Stadium

The wife’s accompanying me to Vegas for SHOT again this year. She’s a football fanatic, so the primary attraction for her was the playoffs the weekend prior to SHOT Show itself.

Last year we, as Vegas novices, gazed longingly at the lucky bastards and biatches who’d reserved stadium seating at Emeril Lagasse’s Stadium restaurant/sports book/100-screen sports viewing Mecca.

This year we knew what we were doing and we’ve got them comfy stadium-style sofa seats reserved for Sunday’s playoffs.

Space Battleship Yamato (2010) Review

The live-action film was released December 1st in Japan. Here’s a positive review.

Happily, the SF Bay Area has enough Japantown movie theaters and arthouse cinemas that there’s a good chance I might get to see it on the big screen in 2011.

Here’s the first two minutes of the released film. Presumably bootlegged (rolleyes) so watch now before Youtube pulls it.

From the Isthmus, no less (the free weekly liberal progressive paper, actually a decent publication when I used to live in Madison, even if they did get my BP up from time to time).

RNS at SHOT Show 2011

Woohoo! Just received my electronic confirmation of my media pass to SHOT Show 2011 at the Venetian/Palazzo complex in Vegas. This year, I’m registered as “Broadcast” media, so I am authorized to shoot videos on the show floor. There was some ah err confusion about that on my part in 2010, which is why I haven’t yet posted any of the ones I may or may not have taken last year… I’ll put ’em up here soon, though.

If there are any specific products or manufacturers you’d like me to check out and report on for ya, post in the comments or email me!

Many, many thanks to Bill Brassard of NSSF for extending the invitation to gunbloggers again at this year’s Gunbloggers Rendezvous!

Along those lines, note that the 2011 Gunblogger Rendezvous dates are set. Check ’em out and start planning!
