End of The World Gun

I’ve got two, a Ruger Security-Six and a Rossi Winchester 92 clone in carbine form, both in Skeeter Skelton’s TEOTWAWKI cartridge, the .357 Magnum. I picked up the Rossi the other week instead of an AR because there was nothing else to buy because I have wanted one for a long time, dammit.

I wonder if somebody makes Pearlite stocks for leverguns? They should match, after all.

Skeeter argued that both gun and ammo would need to be small and easily transported (preferably by horseback) since he would want to “weather the storm” in the mountains, it would need to be easily reloaded using tong tools (no loading benches in the rimrock), it would have to shoot bullets cast over a campfire, it had to be powerful enough for both self-defense and hunting, but frugal enough that a valuable stash of components would outlast the hostilities.  His conclusion was logical, the .357 Magnum.

The kit that would go along on such a trip included ingots of bullet metal, a brick of primers, a pound or two of powder, an

appropriate tong-tool, gas-checks, spare brass, a small cast-iron lead pot and ladle, a pair of mould handles and one bullet mould –  the 358156 HP (he argued that standard SWCs could be cast by using a shortened spud, or by dropping BB’s into the cavity).  All this was packaged in a small Army surplus canvas backpack that was easily grabbed on a moments notice.  One of the most knowledgeable handgunners of the smokeless era had chosen these two bullets (the 358156 SWC and HP) to feed and defend himself and his family for “the duration”…

Now to look for a tong tool….

Less Iron in My System

I now have eight fewer pieces of metal in my head than I did yesterday.

Let me tell you that taking them out hurt only slightly less than it did putting them in.

And unless I shave my head, I don’t even have a kewl scar to show for it.

Happy Christmas Eve

Some of us here at RNS have lost one or more dear to us this year; some have welcomed new bundles of joy into our lives and hearts. I commend to you Winston Churchill’s words from the White House to America in the dark days of December, 1941. Even when all hope seems lost, the Christmas celebration is essential to our spirits and our humanity. My 94-year-old grandmother, the scion of our family, suffered a debilitating stroke last night, yet from her hospital bed she insisted –nay, commanded — that we gather to celebrate in her absence.

Even we atheists and agnostics can appreciate, celebrate and partake in the meaning of the season with our own sacred rituals: After Aberlour Abunad’h, Ardbeg Ugueidail, and a pipe of my late grandfather’s Amphora Full Aroma tobacco to set the mood, the wife and I here at RNS Cali move to Glenfarclas, a true Christmas spirit. May you find equal comfort wherever you are, and whatever befalls you.

All the best this Christmas Eve from we at Random Nuclear Strikes to you.

Joining the Throng

On Saturday, after leaving work, I met Scott and another co-worker at Surplus Arms & Ammo in Tacoma. We arrived about 15 minutes before they opened their doors and there was a ling about 15 people long as we parked. In the following 15 minutes another 20 people showed up, wrapping the line around the building.

At the opening of the front doors, an employee stepped out and began an announcement that yes, they had just received about 40 stripped AR lowers. They had two complete rifles and no uppers or completed lowers. They had PMags and they were $29 and $33 for no-window/windows models respectively. They also had about 10K rounds of 5.56 (but I forget the price).

They also made mention that it would be a waste of time for individuals to even enter the store without a valid ID, listed the acceptable forms of ID, and told folks to check their ID.

They questioned you at the door before letting you in, asking what you wanted. If you wanted ammo, you were directed to it and the non-firearms purchase sales register. If you wanted an AR or AR lower, you had to wait for an open counter person to fill out your bill of sale. After you completed your bill of sale, you were put in a line to electronically fill out your 4473. After that, you waited for them to complete the “stupid phone call”, after which they called you up to the firearms purchase sales register.

It was a mad house in there, it being a rather small space. There were easily 45 people in their at the peak. I do not know what their prices were on PMags before this last week, but the price for an AR lower had risen 20%.

Even though I have all the AR’s I need, I bought one lower as sort of a “price of admission” to the show. I didn’t take any pictures of the throng because I’m sure someone would have been upset with me for doing so. So this is all anecdotal.

The truly sad part of this story is that I had been forming up a group of 4-6 co-workers and I was going to bring my AR building tools and we were going to build lowers on some random weekend morning in the future. That was six weeks ago. No I have almost a dozen people wanting to do so, including a husband/wife team, but the lowers and parts kits are scarce. I’m directing them to Surplus Arms & Ammo next week to begin their journey and we’ll all hope for the best.
