A decade late but I’ll take it

Apple’s new iOS7 includes ” the ability to block phone calls…and messages.” About freakin’ time!

From the moment CallerID showed up, I was mystified that nobody saw the obvious market for being able to block specific callers. Send ’em to voicemail, or block ’em entirely so I never know they called unless I look at the log. Oh, sweet joy.

Cha-Cha-Cha!

In their effort to dance in the blood of murdered children, the anti-civil rights ghouls lost a battle last week when the Connecticut legislature and the Governor listened to the parents and relatives of the Sandy Hook Elementary victims and passed and signed a bill that puts a moratorium on any release of the photos.

This moratorium will only last 365 days, and the ghouls are already counting them down.

The discussion of the politicization of dead children took place for almost 20 minutes this weekend on MSNBC. It was disgusting. So disgusting that you need to watch it.

There should be no reason to have had to pass a moratorium on the release of these photos. Decent people know that waving around pictures of murdered children is wrong. But we are not dealing with decent people. We’re dealing with an agenda.

Phone Encryption

Seecrypt (which is getting all the “avoid the NSA” press today) looked interesting; my wife and I tried it out and it’s pretty intuitive and sound quality was fine for a VOIP product.

However:

SeeCrypt’s advisor is Anthony Chapa, who used to work for the U.S. Secret Service, [and] was quoted on a press release saying that “There are techniques that law enforcement and intelligence organizations have available, and with the help of Seecrypt would not impede their mission.”

I could not see the word backdoor written anywhere but I it was not mentioned that it did not have one either, and for that and because of their bizarre press release, I would stay out of this application. A similar app you might want to look at to encrypt your mobile phone calls is Kryptos.

Well, I suppose we’ll check out Kryptos, then.

UPDATE: Of course, as Ry notes, it’s hard to avoid SS7 when using a phone. Ah well, at least the voice stuff would be encrypted.

ET has a very useful summary on how to interact with Big Brother. Below is just a sample.

Practice privacy

Make one or two everyday tasks completely private, just for practice.

Buy and use a prepaid cell phone or credit card with cash.

Turn on a netflix movie at home, then drive somewhere without your cell phone, and add the spent gas back to your car (with cash) before you get home.

Create an email account that you only access from a Starbucks on the other side of town. (Left your cell at home, and refilled your gas tank before you got back, right?)

Pull the battery out of your cell phone and have a private conversation, or put it in the bathroom with the exhaust fan running loudly, and flush before you pick it back up.

Work out codes with your friend, and text eachother with unassuming messages that are actually code for other messages.

Keep track of all the “traffic” cameras at the intersections near you, practice plotting routes that pass few or no cameras (You probably shouldn’t do this on Google Maps…)

Don’t ever think BB is all knowing.

It seems fewer and fewer people are buying what they’re selling

There’s a lot of talk about MSNBC ratings being down accompanied by the usual gleeful triumphalism over on the right.  I don’t pretend to fully understand the reason for this, but I must point out that it’s not just MSNBC.  The online left has seen a steep decline in traffic since the election as well, which indicates to me that our audience in general is simply not interested in following politics at the moment.

We’ve been through a number of elections, crises, other ups and downs over the past decade but I’ve not seen anything like the drop in interest over the past few months.  If it was just me I’d attribute it to my little project having run its course but it’s happening across the liberal media spectrum. I don’t now what the answer is, but it isn’t that there isn’t a permanent audience. There was until very recently.  It’s that the liberal audience is tuning out and one can only  assume it’s because they don’t like what they see in our politics.

It makes me a little bit more concerned for 2014/2016 than I otherwise would be.

It is their business model that is at fault. There is only a small percentage of the population who is willing to deal with the constant messaging of doom, gloom, “The Republicans want you to die” and “we’re all gonna die because you don’t want to live in a cave”.

Which is why we at RNS, while knowing things are likely to get worse before they get better, try to keep things on the lighter side. I know this and I even make it a point to not treat this as a business.

As a frequent watcher of MSNBC, I can authoritatively state that the “feel good” stories run on that channel are, more often than not, about some mishap befalling their political opposites. The crop from last week were: Michelle Bachmann’s decision to not seek another term, mocking John McCain in Syria and Bob Dole being a RINO.

I watch MSNBC for two reasons: To see what is going to be on the leftosphere the next day and to get my discussion points in opposition built early. That is how I can stand to listen/watch regularly. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure that if I were “progressive-leaning” I too would be depressed and find some sort of escape to get away from the dour folks on that station, and I would definitely stop reading the hate that oozes from the pages of the leftosphere.

Which may be why they love government so much: They’re hoping that the regulators will get rid of the other channels and the only “news channel” will be the one that kisses the President’s ass the best.
