Christmas Gift

One of the best novels I’ve read, and I’ve read a lot of novels. It’s on Kindle as well.

You will want to get one for yourself too.

There Are More Things in Heaven And Earth, Horatio, Than Are Dreamt Of In Your Philosophy

I could swear there’s a ’50s or ’60s SF writer who came up with the idea of immortal aliens regenerating by shifting to an infantile stage. I don’t think it was Niven, any thoughts?

Anyway, here’s a real-life immortal jellyfish that does that. This moves immortality from the level of Henrietta Lacks’ cells to full-blown animalia.

Technical application to humanity left as an exercise for whoever wants to get rich fast and live forever.

In Homage

I just finished a rereading of John Ross’ Unintended Consequences, so here’s a news story about explosive pig farms.

Spread it!

A decade ago this video would have been extraordinary in our little corner of the internet. Nowadays, one’s tempted to say, “nice presentation, but that’s old news.”

Well, just remember that it’s still an extraordinary subject to most Americans, and by extension, most cops. Be nice if it went viral. I mean, it’s certainly packaged in a way to encourage repeat viewing. ๐Ÿ™‚

And cue the outrage in 3, 2,

Oh wait. It is already here

California Republicans are desperate and shameless. In the past two weeks, GOP Assembly members have sent mailings out on what appears to be the state’s dime to their constituents about health insurance. Only, they don’t direct those people to CoveredCA.com to sign up. Instead, they send them to their own astroturf version at the URL CoveringHealthCareCA.com.

On their version, there are links to negative articles and twisted messages intended to sour people on signing up for health insurance before they ever land at the official health exchange site.

Oh heavens. The opposition is doing something effective.

I must have missed the part where the CA GOP is forcing people to this website at knife point. I also must have missed the part where these guys got mad at the CA Dem Party for sending out mailings lying about how wonderful those gun control bills were for public safety.

Win – Win!

The media and the left, but I repeat myself, has looked at the 2013 legislative record of 113th Congress and is dismayed

It’s not quite a “do nothing” Congress รขโ‚ฌโ€œ but it’s not far off.

With only a handful of remaining legislative days on their calendar, this current Congress is on track to go down as one of the most unproductive in modern history.

The paltry number of bills Congress has passed into law this year paints a vivid picture of just how bad the gridlock has been for lawmakers, whose single-digit approval rating illustrates that the public is hardly satisfied with their trickle of legislative activity.

According to THOMAS, the legislative tracking service, this Congress has passed just 52 public laws since it gaveled into session in January.

More! More! More!

I mean, Less! Less! Less!

Don’t these fools know that one of the few times your paycheck is safe is when Congress is not in session?

Dude, Where’s My Patrol Car, eh?

An 1/8th a day keeps the short term memory away.

Smoky Mountie: Legal pot-smoking officer with PTSD is banned from carrying weapons or driving cruisers

A Canadian Mountie who was prescribed marijuana by doctors to help him cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has been banned from front line duties.

Ronald Francis, who serves in the J Division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police force in New Brunswick, is barred from carrying weapons or even driving a patrol car while taking his mediation.

The corporal now smokes three grams – or up to 15 joints – a day after being prescribed the treatment on November 4 and insists the drug does not impair his ability to do his job.

Well, unless his job is to watch Family Guy and eat Doritos, then I’d say he’s high if he believes that.

But I suspect that you could talk your way out of a ticket using Taco Bell coupons with this guy.

This guy should go work for the IMPD.

Somebody get this dude a fan

The vapors have taken over Kim Bashin, HuffPo’s Senior Retail Reporter (whatever the hell that is)

Every year on Black Friday, shoppers across the United States brave crowds to battle each other for door-buster sales on flat-screen TVs, video games, Uggs and the hottest toys.

But other bargain hunters are out stalking a different sort of discounted prey: firearms. And they should find plenty of deals. Gunmakers are marketing aggressively, trying to revive sales that have slowed a bit after a flurry a year ago.

Gun-buying after Thanksgiving is becoming something of a holiday tradition. In each of the past two years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has reported a record number of calls for background checks for gun purchases on the Friday after Thanksgiving. A flood of 154,873 calls on Black Friday in 2012, nearly three times the daily average that year, caused outages at some of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System’s call centers.

The FBI does not track actual firearms purchases, and customers can buy multiple guns at one time, suggesting the total number of weapons sold on Black Friday could be even higher than the number of background-check calls. The bureau has reported 17,238,102 background checks this year through Oct. 31.

Halle-fawkin-lujah.

Law abiding gun owners do less than .9% of our yearly firearms purchasing on one day and they fill their diapers. We should have a second “Buy A Gun Day” every year and get that number up. It’d be like Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice.

Feiler Faster Meets The Last War

Today I saw a horribly vague “article” quoting DiFi and some other goofballs claiming that we’re less safe than before 9/11 due to all these new easily-concealed missile weapons, oh deary dear.

What weapons, I couldn’t say, ’cause they weren’t in the article! This is journalism?

Nosed around and it looks like the source is this interesting piece from the Economist, the usual suspect for elite handwringing. What’s interesting about it is the comment by Connect The Dots demolishing the premise. What counts, he says, is precision GPS-based targeting available to everyone now, so munitions don’t have to be big or fast to be effective. Worrying about a new superfast missile or torpedo, he says, is like worrying about a faster horse in the age of the automobile; now one drone can kill a tank or end a war. I like the implications; read the whole thing (not just because I can’t embed the comment, neither).
