It’s about time!

This would be one federal law I wouldn’t mind Congress proposing,

One Wisconsin lawmaker figures if the U.S. military trusts 19-year-olds with a $10 million tank, then the state should trust them with a beer.

State Rep. Mark Pettis, a Republican who served in the Navy, is pushing a bill that would drop the drinking age to 19 for Wisconsin soldiers — but only if the federal government agrees it will not yank an estimated $50 million a year in highway aid.

It would just mean that I would have to buy that many more beers.

/sarcasm on/ Oh No! /sarcasm off/

Memorial Day

In past years, I’ve done this for Memorial Day. Not so this year, although the sentiment is the same.

First off, since I know how to post music now I’d like to present the United States Marine Band playing Taps, in memory of those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Taps

This last go around of my birthday, my mother presented me with a collection of things my grandmother had collected during my grandfather’s time in the Navy during WWII. Things I had never seen before. She decorated a little storage box that included a bunch of mementos of his travels and made up a great looking three-ring binder with photos.

It is some of those items and photos I would like to share with you all today. If the pic has a blue ring around it, it expands by clicking on it.

My grandfather, Chandler Hendrickson, served aboard the USS Admiral W.S. Benson (AP 120), a troop transporter and supply ship, commanded by Captain Francis H. Gardner.

bookscan1a.jpg

crewscan1a.jpg

It traveled over 126,000 miles during his time aboard.

bookscan3.jpg

Here are a couple more scanned photos of him and his shipmates.

bookscan6a.jpg

Left photo: He is second from the right
Right Photo: He is third from the right in the leather jacket

From what I have been able to piece together of the ship’s travels, he and some of his shipmates were sent to Adak, Alaska in 1943 to serve in a coastal defense role and that is where his journey aboard the USS Benson started.

bookscan12f13.jpg

The guys on a day out digging foxholes and gun pits. Back row, third from the left.

bookscan11b1.jpg

Second from the left, crewing an artillery piece.

From there, the ship spent most of its time in the Pacific Theater shipping men and material to where they were needed. Having all those USMC and Army fellas aboard, the Captain had to keep folks busy so as to make order easier to keep.

In the collection are a few pictures of onboard activites such as boxing matches, tug-o-war games between units and of course shipboard maintenance. Heck, I’ve got photos of them getting mail and that in and of itself looked to be a major ordeal.

Here is a photo of a pie eating contest. I don’t know what the winner got except maybe the first hit of Dramamine if the waters got rough later on that day.

bookscan7a.jpg

It is said that there are no atheists in foxholes. I doubt that there are many on the open ocean either.

bookscan7b.jpg

With all that travel, my grandfather was inducted into the Ancient and Sacred Order of the Golden Dragons

bookscan2b.jpg

For those who don’t know what this is, click here for some background.

Here is one of a few photos I have of the hazing ritual that surrounds being inducted

bookscan8b.jpg

One of the places that the ship ported at multiple times was Bombay, India

bookscan10a1.jpg

Another was the Philipines. Here is a pic of the Legislative building after a goodly number of American shells and bombs were visited upon it.

bookscan14a1.jpg

The USS Benson unloading

bookscan6c.jpg

And last, but not least, the remaining Japanese troops in Manila, surrendering

bookscan14e1.jpg

I will be posting more of these photos in the future.

Please make sure that you do take some time today and remember the people both in our nation’s past, and especially our present, who sacrifice for what we have today.

It was a good day

Made it out to Whidbey Island to the pin shoot yesterday and that was a good thing.

I will abstain from harping on the other good thing that happened yesterday and just ask that head on over to Mr. Completely’s place to read his write up (especially the 2nd from the last paragraph). I’ll get my range report up in a day or so, so think of this as a sneak preview for those of y’all who stop by on the weekends.

Otherwise, I need to catch up on my sleep today, which works out nicely since the weather seems to have taken somewhat of downward turn. It was so hot and muggy yesterday I doubt I could have slept anyway, so it was a good thing I made other plans.

Hey, that’s three good things in a row!

The Professor’s Navy Experience

perfect.gif

There has been a recent brouhaha about women serving in combat roles in America’s Armed Services. Since I, Professor Booty, do not talk politics, I am going to stay away from that subject entirely and just tell you about my experience with women in the military and my dealings with the US Navy.

I’m sure you’ve all heard of or even seen the movie “GI Jane. Well, about three years ago the Navy came to the Occidental Tush Institute to try and recruit some of our students for a top secret program they we’re starting that involved women in the role of what could be considered the female equivalent of the Navy SEALs.

A large department of the Navy, the USMC to be exact, wanted a group of hardcore heartbreakers to be able to infiltrate an enemy’s defenses and cause mayhem and confusion within their lines as only beautiful woman can do.

We had over 30 applicants and 18 of our girls made it through the training. They were given the name “The 69th Beach ASSault Corp, 1st Battalion, 1st Division, USMC or “The 6-911.

After training for over six months and maneuvers for another nine months, the Navy scrapped the program. However, the girls were signed up for six year contracts and were unsure what they would be stuck doing for the remainder of their contracts.

They are all currently serving their country working poolside at the Instruction Officers club in Annapolis. I understand that the Commanding Officer of the facility was the one who pulled the strings to get the 6-911 program cut.

Oh well, at least the girls’ tuition will be paid when they return to the OTI.

Here are some pics of the girls in training and there will be more to follow tomorrow.

Uh-oh

I just went through the posts of the week and realized I didn’t have a firearms related post up yet.

That will not do.

Earlier this week, Headmistress SondraK posted “The 40 Reasons for Gun Control”

Here are some of the top hits,

4. The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994 are responsible for the decrease in violent crime rates, which have been declining since 1991.

5. We must get rid of guns because a deranged lunatic may go on a shooting spree at any time and anyone who would own a gun out of fear of such a lunatic is paranoid.

12. The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which was created 130 years later, in 1917.

14. These phrases: “right of the people peaceably to assemble,” “right of the people to be secure in their homes,” “enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people,” and “The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people” all refer to individuals, but “the right of the people to keep and bear arm” refers to the state.

17. Private citizens shouldn’t have handguns, because they aren’t “military weapons”, but private citizens shouldn’t have “assault rifles”, because they are military weapons.

22. Women are just as intelligent and capable as men but a woman with a gun is “an accident waiting to happen” and gun makers’ advertisements aimed at women are “preying on their fears.”

30. The ACLU is good because it uncompromisingly defends certain parts of the Constitution, and the NRA is bad, because it defends other parts of the Constitution.

31. Charlton Heston, a movie actor as president of the NRA is a cheap lunatic who should be ignored, but Michael Douglas, a movie actor as a representative of Handgun Control, Inc. is an ambassador for peace who is entitled to an audience at the UN arms control summit.

Yep, sounds like every single anti-gun person I’ve ever met.

Mainstream Media Inaction

You read that right,

Brigade soldiers rescue pair of Iraqi hostages

MOSUL, Iraq – They’ve uncovered caches of enemy weapons and flushed out a variety of shady characters since coming to Iraq last fall.
But the most astonishing find of the war for several Tacoma-area soldiers turned up this week in a secret room behind a bookshelf in a northeast Mosul basement.

Following a tip from an Iraqi source, Stryker troops rescued two handcuffed and hooded citizens from a squalid concrete-block room.

One of the captives was an Iraqi government official who works closely with American forces. He had been missing 58 days, said officials with the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division from Fort Lewis.

The other was a wealthy merchant whose family was close to paying a $150,000 ransom, officials said.

Exactly where is the MSM on this?

We triple-dipped in the sugar bowl here, rescuing two men from certain death, killing/capturing known, active terrorists and took all their weaponry. Where the hell are the reporters?

“But Kid, you found this in a newspaper from a medium sized city, there’s your mainstream media!

Umm, sorry, that doesn’t count. The linked article is from the hometown paper of the soldiers who did the rescuing. If that paper didn’t carry this story, they’d lose half their readership in a day.

Listening to the radio, I can tell you every hour on the hour how many people were killed by terrorists yesterday, this week, last week, this month, last month, but I don’t get to hear a single success stories?

Some ‘Vast Right Wing Conspiracy’ we have going here.

And if some left wing asshat tries to tell you we’re creating more terrorists with our presence, kick him in the nuts and show him this. I think we just convinced two klans that we’re the good guys.

Run Gringo, Run!

Not a good sign out of Los Angeles. But then again, when have they given us good news?

Los Angeles Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa said Wednesday that Mexico will play an important role in shaping his policies, reports Mexico’s El Universal Online.

“We are starting a new era. Instead of closing the borders, as stated by Schwarzenegger, we should look at our border as an opportunity,” Villaraigosa said.

Sure. Why not? Everyone else looks to our border as an opportunity.

The top L.A. Democrat lamented that the recent passage by Congress of The Real ID Act, if signed into law, would prevent illegal aliens from getting driver’s licenses.

“Politicians in the United States need to understand that immigrants come here for the same reason that immigrants have always come: to work,” Villaraigosa told El Universal. “Instead of punishing and demonizing them, we should try to integrate them.”

How about if they actually came here legally and tried to intergrate with US? That sounds more like the relationship that immigrants have had with this country.

If I wanted to live in a third world country, I have plenty to chose from that I could move TO.

Villaraigosa also told El Universal that he would not support policies that supposedly persecute the city’s large migrant population.

“I support Special Order 40 [prohibiting police from making migration-related arrests],” he said. “We need our police officers to fight gangs and organized crime. That will keep them more than busy.”

Hey cabron, who do you think are the people in the gangs? They sure as hell aren’t all 5th Gen Hispanics.

Basically, he is saysing, ‘This is your warning gringo, get the hell out’.

Sane Los Angeleans, listen to your mayor or you’ll be getting your change back in Pesos soon.
