The first thing I saw

On the television on September 11th, 2001 was this

I was in the bathroom getting ready for work. The wife had just turned on the television and poked her head in to tell me it looked like a plane had hit the WTC. I got done quickly and walked out to the living room. As I turned the corner into the living room I saw this.

I made sure to pack the 870 and some ammo for my commute.

The next few days, while the government had all air traffic shut down, were eerie. I was living and working just South of downtown Seattle and you could see the planes fly in for their landings at Boeing Field from my living room and the final approach for SeaTac Int’l was directly above my place of employment.

Then nothing.

That’s pretty much how my day started as well, although I don’t remember knowing it was an airliner. Early on we thought it was a small plane. I’m still amazed that more didn’t die in the towers, they did an awesome job evacuating as many as they could.

I’ve re-enabled the Eric Krout WTC image archive today. I’ll probably leave it up for a few days this time around:

I was working in Newport News, VA. I was close enough to see the police barracade the bridge over the James River. It was a bad feeling.

What Hunter S. Thompson had to say on 9/12/11 (http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?id=1250751):

“The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now — with somebody — and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy.”

He couldn’t have been more correct.

    of course, I meant 9/12/01
