Somebody needs to read the “World News” section of the newspaper

Apparently, misogyny only exists in first world capitalist nations.

In Case You Haven’t Noticed, Misogyny Has A Lot To Do With Capitalism

I’ve been thinking a lot about the UC Santa Barbara shooter. Online feminists are boiling with rage at the idea that a man would shoot women for not finding him desirable, and we’ve read a lot about the misogyny that clearly pervaded his mind.

But I’m not so sure where to draw the line between misogyny and plain old consumer capitalism on this one — or any of them.

I mean, what’s the basic impulse of capitalism? “I want, I want, I want.” (I recently heard someone say on TV, “How the hell can people say we’re a Christian society with a commandment like ‘Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods’? That’s the basis of our entire economy!”)

In America, having the means to purchase what you covet is also the basis of social status, and thus power. People look up to you on the basis of your education, your income and the good taste to display it with the “right” possessions. We’re all brainwashed, right? It’s a pretty fucking shallow way to live.

No, Ms. Madrak, you are living the shallowest life of all. Blaming only YOUR immediate surroundings for all the ills of all women, when less than 1000 miles to the south, in a tequila ridden socialist nation, women have it so much worse than you ever will.

Or a few thousand more miles away, where women are still bought and sold as property.

But none of them matter to you unless MSNBC or al-Jazeera reports on it because you are so put upon to have to defend your voting record of the last decade. And those damnable “Rethuglicans”. And let us not even mention the fact that some people want to sell stuff and other people want to buy stuff so the people that want to sell stuff advertise their stuff.

I know, it is so horrible. #first world problems and all that.

Someone needs to look up Andrei Chikatilo on Wikipedia. You can have a woman-hating serial killer even without capitalism, in the midst of a Communist country. Of course part of the reason they didn’t catch him until after Communism fell was in part because there were bureaucrats who didn’t believe a serial killer could happen in a Communist country, and this attitude didn’t help the investigation at all.

Not to mention Communist Cuba has a very machismo culture thanks to its Spanish roots. Not to mention China has always been a male-dominated society, before the rise of Communism, during Mao’s era, and even into now which can be seen with a heavily male demographic thanks to the 1-child policy. Not to mention that Russia is still a very male-dominated society, before, during, and after Communism. (I once heard a story – no source- that the first thing said to the first female cosmonaut who came to their space station was ‘great! Now we have someone who can cook for us.”) Not to mention modern feminism got its start in capitalist countries such as the US and the UK. Not to mention Islamic countries have very misogynistic laws even while they reject America’s consumer culture.

But hey, it’s the Two Minute Week Hate, and we have always been at war with East Asia Eurasia the women-hating Taliban the rich gun owners white people misogyny.

What that blurb says is that the writer has no clue what “capitalism,” “misogyny,” or “covet” actually mean, or how they work, and absolutely no sense of history. Yes, I’ll grant her that hers is a pretty shallow world, but her lack of understanding doesn’t mean the rest of us are still in the kiddie pool.
Secondly, who’s the “we” you are talking about being brainwashed, and have you thought it through to ponder who’s doing the brainwashing if “we” are?
