Got Coin?

I want.

We’re really close to that pocketless Star Trek future where your totally functional EDC kit is ridiculously light and thin.

  1. I know it’s a dumb question, from a very twentieth century boy, but those are often the best.

Is not one of the advantages of keeping things separate that if the one basket into which all your eggs are placed gets lost or damaged, you are more seriously fucked?

I keep my music system entirely separate from my computer, just like it was separate in 1990, when I first got started with CDs. I have never felt the need to combine the two, and have often been very grateful that I had not, as when the computer was down for some idiot reason, and my mind was then particularly free to listen to music, and particularly wanting to.

Does not something similar apply to credit and debit cards?

I quite see that many might find this new device fabulous. But might not many others regret having one?

I’m still waiting to be able to make instant payments by way of credit/debit card to other people. Go out for lunch/dinner with a bunch of friends and everyone can just pay their portion to whoever actually gets the check, even if they don’t have cash and change. Sure, there are the add-on card readers, but it’s still not a basic function, and they usually are kind of bulky and usually charge extra for non-swipe payments even in these days when phones can talk to each other by slapping them together.

Brian, I agree that I wouldn’t put *everything* on there. I already have a couple of credit cards in my wallet I use only for “walking-around” purposes. Add a single-purpose bank account with a couple hundred bucks in it, and you have your “I am willing to carry this around in public” card with all three accounts for gas, food, and other purchases outside the home.

The credit and debit cards connected to your “private” bank accounts (we use separate ones for direct deposit, bill paying, etc., and never use them for shopping) stay in the safe at home.

Unknown, try the TabbedOut app. I’ve heard good things about it and purportedly it allows you to “easily” split tabs with others. At the least, it’s a pretty cool way to pay your tab from your table automatically without involving your server, which is nice when it’s busy and you want to leave without having to wait for the check.

As for paying others directly, I’m pretty sure that’s as easy as making a payment to their Paypal account. All of my banking apps have these annoying “See how easy it is to send money to your friend with your phone!” ads, so there’s probably a bank equivalent too. So, if you can use one of those apps in conjunction with something like TabbedOut, I think the capability’s already there.

Which, is exactly the way I’d expect in the 21st century.
