I was musing last night about the injustice of Elijah Craig 18 being discontinued, and I thought about other things that might remain unavailable for some time. Even though buying into a panic is stupid, one can’t help but think: What is the hole in my collection?
Well, I have many holes, really, but one of them is that I don’t have a really cheap rifle. One you could feel comfortable leaving in your vehicle, but would still be accurate and powerful enough to be useful if, say, driving home through Oakland after an earthquake.
Having never been to a gun show, I’m unfamiliar with tomato-stake Mosins, but the price point sure seems right, and more importantly ammo is cheap, powerful and (I think) available.

Well they aren’t gone here. My local shop has one, as well as 3 AR- platform rifles and a ton of standard capacity PMags. Yeah, picking up five of those tomorrow…

Agreed; I so wanted the plastic “scout” stock for the Mauser to be my entry into K98 ownership, but it just looked so awful. This is actually cool.

And people thought I was crazy for picking up a couple a few years back. Just with I’d picked up a couple more 8mm Mausers and SKSs, too. They used to be cheap enough to give as Christmas and Birthday presents.
The first rifle a nephew of mine got was a Yugo 8mm and a case of ammo under the tree shortly after turning 18 – he said the old farts at the range eyed him a little skeptically when he first showed up alone, but then warmed up when they saw an old wooden stock and a careful young man willing to listen. It’d be nice if guns like that were still cheap like that.
emdfl, the cool thing to me about the Archangel stock is the provision for a drop-in Timney trigger. Isn’t the trigger one of the things that’s superior in the Finnish Mosins? Of course a Timney costs more $$.
Hm, I see Archangel makes a Rem700 stock, price is comparable to the McMillan Basic, although quite a bit cheaper than the Full Inlet option… decisions, decisions.
Dunno about the trigger, heh, I haven’t had the time to take the damn thing out to the range since I bought 4-5 years ago. Same on the 60K of really old ammo I have for it.
I’ve got a M39 Finn Mosin, and the trigger is great: long first stage, then a clean-breaking, light second. Quite accurate, too. And better sights and smoother action than the standard 91/30.
I’ve never wanted much for my old Mosin 91/30, but that, I WANT!
