Messing with perception?

I was looking up a photo for something or other last night and I was at the Bing Image Search page. In the fifth photo on the top row was a link to pics of the Flea Party Occupiers under the search term “Occupy Wall Street”. I clicked the link and found more than a few pics that weren’t exactly flattering. Signs from Socialist/Communist orgs, lots of anti-war signage and anti-capitalist slogans, lots of skanky looking folks demanding free shit or that people of a certain income level be eaten, bad costumes, etc..

I moved onto search for the pic I was looking for, and then on a whim I wandered over to Google to look at the pics that came up under a search for “Occupy Wall Street”. I was genuinely surprised to see that there were absolutely no unflattering pics in the first few pages of results.

I am not knowledgeable about the parameters Bing uses to come up with photos in a search, but I would imagine that it has something to do with putting the most popular pics near the top. Whereas Google makes it widely known that the most popular pic gets top billing and then down the line it goes.

So now I have to wonder if Google has changed their parameters or do they actively have someone sending certain pics down the line so that they don’t come up in the first few pages?

I have no doubts about Google Co.’s political leanings. I do, however, wonder how many useless idiots it is taking to keep this charade up.

Give this TED seminar a viewing. I think it’ll speak to the situation.
