RNS Quote of the Day: 02/23/11

When you look at it properly, the light shines right on through

Public employees unions are an interesting hybrid. Industrial unions are organized against the might and greed of ownership. Public employees unions are organized against the might and greed…of the public?

Joe Klein – Wisconsin: the Hemlock Revolution

Yes.

Now is everyone seeing why public employee unions are a bad idea?

  1. Rivrdog says:

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater. No union is a BAD idea, per se, it was just a bad idea to allow them to corrupt the political process so deeply. The original idea of free men banding together within their crafts to present their technical skill as a block item for sale to appropriate bidders is the BEST of ideas, but when the CRAFT unions morphed into LABOR unions, te wheels came off that wagon.

I prefer NOT to consider the only option as killing off the unions, because when that’s done, workers will be back in the serf mode again, not a doubt of THAT in my military mind.

That has to be some way, within our Constitution, to end the political power of the labor bosses without killing off the whole idea of unions. The current Right’s zeal against the unions will play right into the hands of a rapacious corporate oligarchy. Such oligarchies are MUCH more difficult to remove than even entrenched dictatorships of government.
