Covert .223 Backpack

My love affair with 5.11 items continues. Somebody over there has some good design sense. Take, for example, this unassuming backpack.

Designed for an HK 9mm subgun. But wouldn’t a .223 be better?

My Kel-Tec SU-16CA fits perfectly. I’ve got an even bulkier optic on it than the one pictured.

If one wanted a trunk-gun case or BOB backpack that didn’t scream “gun case,” but allowed rapid deployment of a firearm, this fits the bill really well.

I got one for me and one for the wife.

What a great trunk gun! I looked into buying a Kel-Tec PLR-16 a while back. (Phil talked me out of it.) I think your SU-16CA is a better option. Although, up here, I could actually get the SU-16C!

I love 5.11 gear and have a couple of their bags in my collection. Although I prefer Maxpedition bags, when 5.11 has a similar bag it is always good quality at a cheaper price. I “celebrate their entire catalog.”

I found that Nike baseball equipment bags work well for anything that is shorter than 26 inches when folded…

Have you received it yet? I like the front pouch for the handgun and it looks like that is sold separately. Is the belt that it uses removable? If so, it seems like it would be ideal to attach to the hipbelt of my backpacking backpack – carrying while wearing a hipbelt is a bit awkward currently…

Scott, IIRC your -16C allows firing with the stock folded, which would mean even faster deployment. 🙂 Although I should point out I t-h-i-n-k that the Kel-Tec RFB in .308 would also fit….

EMDFL, that’s a great idea too!

Cybrus, I should have clarified that I have the backpacks. 5.11’s old catalog wasn’t terribly clear; the front pouch for the handgun is included in the price of the pack. (You can also buy it separately; their current catalog seems to have clearer language about this.) And yeah, the instant-open feature would work great on a hipbelt, too. The strap used to rip the pouch open has velcro on the back, so for retention purposes you might want to glue a velcro strip on your hipbelt to give the strap somewhere to live without dangling….

I was looking over all the little features last night, and one thing that stands out is the clever way the front pouch accommodates a full-size service pistol in a space that appears to the observer to be far too small to accommodate such a thing(the muzzle invisibly tucks into part of the strap). My Beretta 92FS fits without complaint. The illusion goes a long way to making this look like a “civilian” backpack.

Cybrus, you’re on the exact same page as I am in relation to carrying while backpacking. Here’s the 5.11 pistol pouch by itself: http://www.511tactical.com/browse/Home/Law-Enforcement/Accessories/Bags-Backpacks/Select-Carry-Pistol-Pouch/D/30100/P/1:100:10000:10900:10905/I/58604
$25 seems very reasonable for this. I am thinking of attaching it between my packs two shoulder straps across the chest, which should place it similarly to when it’s attached to the 5.11 sling pack.

Yeah, DW, if you put some kind of stiffener in it (2″ foam works for me) you can drop in a bandoleer of mags and just toss the bag in the back of the vehicle. Nobody wantlooks twice at old gear bags…
