We had a brief thunderstorm with rain and lightning the other night. It’s extremely unusual to experience any kind of rainstorm at this time of year. Even with rain we’ll get thunder maybe once every two years or so. And this is the second time I’ve seen lightning in a Bay Area rainstorm in a decade. Pics by my nephew Chris.

We had, like two “big ass” storms just today. Surprisingly only lost power once.
This is the time of year in Florida where it does nothing BUT rain. Weeds in the yard are looking good, I tell you.
That can’t be right. Miami was sunny on Burn Notice last night. It never rains in Florida on TV!
In Portland, OR, we had a very unusual (for this region) squall line go through Thursday evening. The line was accompanied by a 40-mile wide wall of downbursts and straight-line winds to 70 mph. Ho-hum stuff for the Midwest, but that’s a (maybe) 10-year event around here.
There was damage, and my doctor-daughter reports that the Emergency Trauma System called a system-wide Mass Casualty Event due to the hundreds of people flooding the local ERs with severe breathing problems due to all the blowing dust and pollen (high tree pollen right now). Her ER set up a Mobile ER tent with 100 beds, every one equipped with nebulizers, O2 and the tent had all available respiratory therapists on duty.
A couple of funnel clouds were reported, and NOAA called several Severe Thunderstorm alerts as the line progressed SE to NW (also very unusual).
Glow-bull warmening, I’m sure.
BTW David, your weather event and mine were caused by a cut-off Low pressure area which has zero jet-stream support for progressivity, and has been hanging around the West Coast for almost two weeks now.
These cut-off Lows used to be rather rare, but during the cooling period we’ve been in for the past 10 years, they’ve become more frequent.
Interesting….
