RNS Quote of the Day, 02/05/09

Tam nominated Edward II as having died the world’s most ignominious death. While I don’t think that’s quite a death “too horrible to contemplate” (I can think of worse), what I noticed was an aside from the linked Wikipedia article on Edward:

“This savagery [of the manner of his murder] also reflected the general malaise, anger, and pessimism of the new age of global cooling.”

–Norman F. Cantor (In the Wake of the Plague, p. 75)

Emphasis mine. The “new age of global cooling” refers, of course, to the Little Ice Age. Hmm. The Goracle to the contrary, we seem to be entering such a new age ourselves….

Good God, it’s the 14th Century all over again! I never finished Barbara Tuchman’s A Distant Mirror. Time to dig that bad boy out and see what timely lessons are to be gleaned from immersing myself in the “calamitous 14th Century,” the age of the Black Death and other interesting times.

On an entirely related note I just bought this from AIM Surplus. Got yours yet? It’s Berdan-primed, but as Phil notes, if it’s your SHTF ammo, who cares? You’re not gonna be reloading it.

What do those chargers fit in the way of a milsurp rifle, David?

BTW, Radway Green stuff is decent, only a little less accurate than the famous Aussie milsurp ammo, and better than the south African stuff, and WAAAAAY better than the Indian/Paki ammo.

  2. David says:

I actually have no idea, RD. I’m hoping they’ll allow for easy fillup of HK or M1A magazines. If not, they’re at least a really handy way to tote five spare rounds.

Good to know on the accuracy. Figured it had to be better than Indian (I work with Indians, and even they denigrate India’s industrial QA/QC) but didn’t know about the other stuff.

In my M-1A it came in a close third for accuracy.
Hirtenberg was 1st and Malaysian (strangely enough) took 2nd.
About 1/2 inch @ 100 yds seperated them all, so not too much to choose from.

Guess I need to check their website tonight!!!

I’m noting that on an M1A there’s something called a “stripper clip guide.” So I’m assuming you can top off an M1A/M14 with stripper clips?

  5. Derek says:

Yes, you can top off with stripper clips. Though I recall Boston T. Party saying something about how impractical it was anyway… I’ll have to get back to you on that. I’ve never tried it myself.

I’m surprised they have ’em on hand. Good to know… hopefully I finish getting my CMP stuff squared away for Greek ammo too. Did you just start your “CA chill time” on that SOCOM II?

  6. David says:

Yup. Just posted pics. Oh yeah, I’m broke now for a while. Betcha my credit card hurts more than your credit card.

Is there any benefit to getting the Lake City stuff from CMP over the Greek? (i.e., more accurate, etc.)? Just curious as I’ve noticed the difference in price.

I missed the first-day-of-the-month San Jose Zouaves practice match, so I won’t be participating in a CMP-qualifying match until March. So if CMP starts telling you that they’re running out of .30-06 in the next month or so, let me know ASAP and we’ll have ourselves a little talk. I’ve got two Garands with nothing to feed them; they’re hungry!
