Don’t forget food, clothing, firewood

When stocking up, remember that guns are good, but they can’t feed ya or keep ya warm.

Woman freezes to death in remote Montana cabin

MISSOULA, Mont. – Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to a woman from Oklahoma freezing to death in a remote cabin in the Garnet Mountains after she and her common-law husband were apparently caught off guard by an early-winter snow storm.

Mickey Charlene Davis, 67, had probably been dead for about two weeks when authorities reached the cabin between Interstate 90 and Helmville in Western Montana just before midnight on Jan. 13, Powell County Sheriff Scott Howard said.

The sheriff said he and a deputy found 44-year-old Jack McWhorter of Oklahoma starving and hypothermic, leaning against his wife’s body with an array of weapons spread in a half circle in front of him.

I must admit that there but for the grace of God (and Survivalblog, Paratus blog, and Phil’s By Ourselves, For Ourselves series) go I. I have far more guns than I need for survival or defense, and my food/water/SHTF supplies are in sore need of attention.

Emphasis and h/t: this thread on Calguns.

I’ve often heard it said “you can’t eat ammo” but with a supply of ammo I do believe I’d be out looking for meat on the hoof.

The first thing that you lose when you become hypothermic is the ability to think clearly. It would be worse if the people affected weren’t all that bright in the first place.

From what we know here, both factors seem to have been in play.
