I can have a Shuttery?

01-20-08_0843.jpgI saw these shutters while walking the dogs through the far reaches of our neighborhood. I’ve never seen INTERNAL shutters before. Looks like the slats (louvers?) are rotating, so you can take momentary snap shots at looters adjust the amount of light coming in. Click to embiggen.
Our neighborhood dates to the 1960s. I’ve not seen these before. Can you still buy them? More importantly, does anybody make them in heavy-gauge steel?

My grandparents had them in their bathrooms… in their circa-1950’s house. Very annoying – there were so many joints, they squeaked incessantly (these particular ones were made out of wood, though).

My German friend near Aachen has them on the outside of the house and they roll up and down – kinda like a blast curtain actually, wonder where they got that idea?
    Heh.

I’ve been in a new house in Phoenix which has them, of wood though.

The steel roll-up window coverings dirtcrashr mentioned are quite common, and can be ordered in almost any size. They probably won’t stop a bullet larger than a .22 long rifle, though. Good to stop rocks, etc and to prevent burglar entry, though.

Yes. “Plantation Shutters” …available at your local Home Depot and *VERY* popular in the desert…dandy way to knock down the a/c bill a wee bit…those are mostly wood…I suppose you COULD custom-fab out of steel…but I’m guessing it’d be labor-intensive…

Cool — another excuse to go to Home Depot!
