Reducing their carbon footprint

So the mother of these two girls has the cable company turn off the feed to supposedly keep money in the family bank account to pay for gas.

When a daily dose of Hannah Montana became impossible, the Vance sisters knew it was time to take to the streets.

Sadie, 9, and her sister Pyper, 7, marched around downtown Salt Lake City chanting, “Lower the gas prices,” while carrying homemade signs. The sisters decided to protest after losing their favorite cable TV shows when their mother, Michelle, had to sacrifice cable TV to pay for her daily commute.

“Gas prices are too high,” Sadie said. “I just decided to come and protest so they’d go down.”

Yeah, you know what, I’m calling bullshit on this.

First, how damn big is your cable bill that canceling it gets you gas money?

Second, what else have they given up? Does mom still get her latte every morning? How about getting rid of one of the family vehicles for a more efficient one?

Third, because I’m wondering if dad works? He was able to wheel the little chillin’s downtown for their protest on a weekday.

Lastly, these two are followers of former SLC Mayor Rocky Anderson who is one of those types who only worries about human rights abuses if the US is supposedly committing them.

Methinks they need to re-examine their priorities and quit making policy statements by lying to their daughters about how effective protests can be.

The price of gas has cause their carbon footprint to shrink. They should be proud of that alone.

I can never gather any sympathy for someone whose heart is broken because they don’t have cable TV. When I was growing up, we were one of those families that just didn’t have the money for cable. I never missed it. I spent days reading or playing outside. I still don’t care much about cable; I find that it’s usually 50 channels of “nothing on”.

I grew up and left the house before there was Cable, but my parents still had a B&W TV long after everybody else had a color one.
I have saved quite a bit of money over the years by not having cable, in 20-years over $25,000 – even at the same time I worked for a TV-service provider (on-screen Guide).

Others call me a tightwad, I estimate that the usual cable bill around here is minimally $100/month – to get Hannah Montana I believe you have to get the Disney Channel and that’s usually an extra something in a premium package – $200/mo? or therabouts. I know people who put their family-plan cell-phone bill first and it’s at least $100/mo. and TV is an even stronger requirement. How much for the Golf Channel? Around here some people are going to Video On Demand services and more…things add-up.

yes, I know it all adds up, but nowhere else int he article did it say anything about other “luxuries” the fam gave up for gas $$$.

Which leads me to believe its a stunt.
