Here is a Lesson

That I dearly wish was taught in the public schools.

Tim Blair took a drive over the weekend and posted up on the subject of the history (and dangers) of left wing politics.

The history of left-wing politics is a history of unintended – and invariably negative – outcomes.

Glorious workers’ revolutions lead to tyranny. Welfare causes misery. Government-funded tertiary education ends up subsidising the same proportion of private school and state school students as previously attended universities under full fees. Public broadcasting evolves into elite programming funded by people who never watch or listen to it. Decades of state film funding gives us films nobody pays to see.

I could go on. Hey, I will:

And he does, giving multiple examples of just how insipid left wing government can be. This is my favorite.

Meant to deliver cheaper petrol, this $20 million baby – due for launch in December – is believed likely (by four government departments) to instead make petrol more expensive.

The way FuelWatch works, see, is that petrol stations all tell a Big Government Website what their prices will be for the next 24 hours – this is locked in, which is the problem – and you drive home whenever you’re low on fuel and check out the site and then drive over to wherever the cheapest petrol station is.

You know, if there was such a demand for a cheap-fuel site someone might already have come up with one. And they have! According to MotorMouth.com.au (a private site that gets by on advertising) the cheapest petrol in my area is $1.53 per litre at the Caltex on Alison Rd.

MotorMouth has been around for eight years. It was previously known as FuelWatch.

I laughed. And then I cried knowing that this is what will be coming our way.
