Last year we had some problems with my cheap-ass shelter. The winds pretty much bent it all to hell. Phil’s bringing something much sturdier this year.
However, we’ll still need to tie it off. Last year, one of the nice fellows shooting next to us gave us a hand tying down the sail that was my shelter canopy, and Phil and I both observed him tying a very kewl knot that neither of us knew how to tie.
After a lot of reflection, I am pretty certain that knot was what my grandfather called a “trucker’s knot.” It’s shown here as a “trucker’s hitch,” and a very very useful knot it is.
By the way, this site is a beautiful example of how the Internet can be more useful than books in conveying information. I have some very nice books on knots, but none of them hold a candle to this site, with its slow- and fast-motion animations of knots being tied. Just a great site.

The site also doesn’t work in firefox, so I had to dust off IE for it. It was worth it.
Hmm. I use Firefox for most everything, and that site works fine for me!
I have noticed a weird “feature” of Firefox where it spontaneously blocks sites that I like for no apparent reason. This happens most often with Survivalblog, and the blockage will last for a month or so, then go away, then come back. Odd….
