Two articles from today’s Seattle Times:
First up: The condo market in Seattle is booming. The only problem (at least according to the article) isn’t that a goodly number of them are under 700sqft, including closet space, but that women aren’t buying enough of them.
As new condominiums fill Seattle’s skyline, who’s buying in downtown is subtly becoming a gender thing.
Half of downtown condo buyers are couples, a third are single men and the remaining 17 percent are single women, condo marketer Leslie Williams told a forum on downtown living presented Wednesday by the Downtown Seattle Association.
A decade ago, single men and single women each were about 25 percent of the market, said Williams, president of Williams Marketing.
“Females just can’t afford the prices downtown,” she said. “The biggest issue is affordability.”
In the very next paragraph, the author of the article actually feels the need to explain the meaning of the phrase “Median Income” to her readers, and then goes on to quote the bullshit “Women earn 69% of what men do” statistic. Methinks that Ms Rhodes, the author, only discovered the meaning of the phrase “Median Income” while doing research for the article and therefore wanted to make sure that let anyone as ignorant as herself, or shall I say, ignorant enough to believe a bullshit statistic as the one she quotes, was up to speed on simple statistical phraseology.
I couldn’t be that women don’t want to live in crime infested neighborhoods while the city puts roadblocks in front of their path to self-defense and they do not feel safe. Nor could it be that more and more women, possibly even 8% of women, cannot picture themselves paying $300K for 1000sqft when they can just as easily rent it for $1200 a month until they catch their man and start their ” family makin’ ” (which accounts for a large part of the reason women make less than men).
Nope, it has to be the international sexist conspiracy to keep women out of condos. Subsidies Please!!!
Next up, Washington just got a little less white.
That is not my term, that term was used by William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.
In the years since the 2000 census, the state of Washington has added more than 500,000 new residents.
More than half were people of color.
Nationally, “we’re dealing with a bigger population and one’s that’s more diverse and dispersed throughout the country,” said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.
“Everyone’s getting a taste of this new minority.”
Frey said that while “diversity adds a kind of cultural vibrancy” to cities like Seattle, “we shouldn’t make it sound like every neighborhood is a rainbow community. There are still places in this country that are still pretty white.”
My first response was, unless they’re illegals (which a goodly number of them are due to our state’s “Sanctuary Status”) who really gives a shit? Apparently, Lornet Turnbull and the folks at the Seattle Times do.
Maybe next week, these “culturally vibrant and tasty” new minorities won’t be able to afford condos either and we’ll get to hear all about it!
