Because the city is run by idiots

For idiots, which is why I left it.

Developers plan to build a hotel instead of housing

In exchange for more downtown housing, Seattle politicians agreed two years ago to take a lower price for the historic Alaska Building than it might have fetched.

But the developers who bought the century-old building have since decided to eliminate that housing and build a Marriott hotel instead. And that’s their call, city officials say.

“When the city sold the building, the purchaser’s intent was to do some sort of residential project,” said Marty McOmber, spokesman for Mayor Greg Nickels. But, “the purchaser’s sales agreement didn’t specify anything along those lines.”

Doh! Forgot to put the important stuff in the contract. Ooops, sorry homeless dudes.

If Nickles had an (R) at the end of his name, you can bet that there’d be conspiracy theories about how the “mistake” was on purpose and of kickbacks, etc, overflowing from the mouths of boobs. As it is, a lot of the local left don’t like him much, and if I hung around more of them I’m sure I’d be hearing something along those lines.

Good for the developers, if the Alaska Building is where I remember; that’s prime real estate for a hotel.
