Just another reason why TSA shouldn’t be unionized.

This morning, my brother, a doctor, drove from his home near Lake Tahoe to the Sacramento airport to catch a commuter flight to San Francisco Airport, where he had another flight to catch.

He, along with hundreds of other people, missed their commuter flights because Sacramento TSA didn’t show up for work today. They apparently had a single person working to screen for all flights. The line was ridiculous.
I found out about this when he called me to ask whether or not the local public-transit train system (BART) allowed long-term parking, because he’d just driven from Sacramento all the way to Concord in order to hop the train to San Francisco airport. Amazingly, I think he’ll make it in time to board his flight out of San Francisco.

(When working for a legal courier service, I once drove from Sacramento to downtown San Francisco in 45 minutes flat. I’m sure my brother performed a similar feat today. Neither one of us have any professional speed-driver training, but our dad raced in Germany while he was in the Air Force, so maybe there’s some genetic carryover or something. Or maybe it’s just that the average Californian practices driving really fast on the freeway every day.)

That is one hell of a run! Did you have a magic car displacer or some stuff like that? I cannot get from Livermore to Hayward in less that 50 minutes most of the time. However I did make it to St Paul MN form Las Vegas in 20 hours. But it is not worth it if you have to explain to your insurance company how you got a speeding ticket in Utah and MN in the same day.

Well, I was careful not to go during the rush hours, although I cut it pretty close. I was in a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder (which I still own) with their V6 engine, but no special modifications of any kind. I picked up a box of documents from the Attorney General’s office (IIRC, that was the day I rode the AG’s elevator with Frank Luntz, who is shorter than you’d think, and I’m 5’8″) and jetted out to my car, hopped on Hwy 80 and did my level best not to drop below 100 while safely maneuvering through early afternoon traffic.

Not as hard as it sounds — you just find like-minded folks and stick with ’em, forming your own little herd of speeders. And since most folks go 80 on 80 anyway, an additional 20 or 30 mph doesn’t really feel all that much faster.

BTW, my wife commutes from Livermore to the Peninsula, and even in the awful morning traffic she’s figured out how to get to work in about 45 minutes most days. Hint: she avoids the 238-580 interchange entirely and takes surface streets in Castro Valley to get from 580 to 238 right before the exit to 880.

  3. You’re right…I just checked the Sacto Bee page…not a word.
