I Sight: Part 2

Sunday was rangeday, the continuation of last weekend’s adventure in learning that my iron sights on my PTR-91 were 8MOA off. I scoped the rifle the next day and was determined to get out this weekend and sight it in, since I believe in the theory that if you don’t know where your MBR hits, it is a very loud club.

As Saturday was “shopping day with the wife”, rangeday was Sunday. At the ass-crack of dawn I was gathering my rifles and equipment in preparation of attending The Church of the Holy High-Speed Projectile. Joe Huffman has a partial transcript of our gospel listed here.

Along with the PTR-91, I also brought along my Ruger 77 MK I, chambered in 22-250.

I figured that since I haven’t shot much over the summer, and scoped rifles not since April or May, I should shoot something on the more inexpensive end of the scale to get my eyes back in tune (that PMP stuff isn’t too bad and costs less than $8 a box).

After arriving at the place of worship, I set my bench stuff up and proceeded to recheck the zero of the Ruger with some 100yd 3-shot groups

After I settled down a bit, the Ruger got back into it’s habit of outshooting me.

One thing I couldn’t get past yesterday was the rangemaster calling target changes at the worst time for me. I quit while I was ahead with the Ruger as I could feel the sandman rolling down the range’s driveway and wanting to talk to me.

I then proceeded to sight in the PTR at 100yds.

As you can see, I got myself a little confused between my target scopes and this temporary one on the PTR. I was used to 1/8 MOA clicks and the turrents on this 6x not only run backward but have 1/4 clicks. Waaaay too high and too far to the right after the first adjustment. Round nine was supposed to be my next to last shot, as I was trying to get my 200yd POI ready with that target.

Alas, it was not to be so, as the rangemaster again called for target change.

200 went rather well, seeing as how my eyes were beginning to not want to focus through the glass (no problems outside the scope), though I took so damn long that I couldn’t get my 5th shot off before target change time again.

I said screw it. 90 minutes and I was out of there. The place was starting to fill up with the yakkers (the guys who talk more than they shoot) anyway.

One good thing besides getting the PTR sighted in was that I found a rifle that likes the mid-1990 147gr Aussie  I bought a while back. Barak says ptoowie to it, liking pre-88 Australian only. I’m guessing that the 1990 stuff Australian Defense Industries released in the blisterpacks was delingked MG ammo and not the good stuff that came canned and bandoliered

In other gunblogging posts from this weekend, Ben the Reasonable Nut has a tale up as to why you absolutely must wear eye protection whenever you are shooting.

An excellent gun. Supposedly good ammo. Accidents can and will happen.

For you perscription bespectacled shooters out there, like me, I use these and I highly recommend them.

You appear to be ready for either sagerats or goblins, sir.
