Long Ago

On an Interweb far, far away…

I was a late bloomer on getting on the web, sometime around January of 2000. When I did finally get online, I had a Compuserve dialup account and used it to look up the things I was interested in so that I could connect with other folks who were also interested with those things.

My very first find was The Never Ending Rush Story which you can still find bits and later editions of here.

The premise was to take the band members, their hobbies, the stories from the songs and other bits of Rush trivia and write anywhere from a sentence to a paragraph of the strangest pieces of fiction you could think of. Another writer would come to add more, and another, and another, and so on.

My favorite bit was when the Digital Man, in his black limosine, had his plan to steal Neil Peart’s arms foiled by the appearance of Neil’s out of wedlock Amazonian daughter.

I enjoyed adding to and reading this so much that when the series was voluntarily stopped due to real-life horrors in the band member’s lives, I printed the entire series, Parts 1 thru 9, and put them into three very large 3-ring binders, which I read on occasion.

My other favorite hang out was the Mystery Science Theater Caption This! site, hosted by the SciFi Channel. It is also defunct, but you can still find links to it.

I don’t have the time to go into the history of MST3K for the non-Misties, but I can say that countless hours were spent at Caption This! making a select few fellow admirers laugh their asses off and having the favor returned. It also helped get the wife into the series.

Anyone else remember either of these places?

Next week, I’ll be posting another question along the lines of this one. So get those memories sharpened up.

I loved “Caption this!” Another long-time Mistie here. I even have a tattoo of Gamera on my left shoulder. 😉
