What if

This wasn’t Mexico

Mexico’s top electoral court announced Monday that a partial recount will not change the outcome of the hotly disputed July 2 presidential election, which sparked a constitutional crisis and massive demonstrations that have shackled the capital for nearly two months.

The Federal Electoral Judicial Tribunal stopped short of officially declaring Felipe Calderón the winner over Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the populist former mayor of Mexico City. But few here expect the court to alter the final outcome of the race, especially after the court announced Monday that it had rejected nearly all of López Obrador’s fraud claims.

López Obrador, of the Democratic Revolutionary Party, had demanded a full recount and has said that he would not accept the results of the partial recount. He also has said he plans to declare himself the president of Mexico, regardless of the tribunal’s decision.

What if, instead of backhandedly accepting the SCOTUS decision in 200, Gore had declared himself President and attempted to reign as “The Popular Vote President”?

How many of today’s left-wing crowd do you think would have followed him? My guess is quite a decent number. They would have been subversive and abrasive at the same time, except this time, “for a cause”.

More importantly, how many members of Congress do you think would have followed Gore? Right off the bat, I think that probably not too many would, preferring to lie in wait until they saw some numbers.

But that would have been the beginning of America’s Second Civil War. Gore knew this and decided that he either didn’t want the office badly enough or that he didn’t have the guts to try it.

However, with this happening just next door, and the hard-left watching closely, I am of the opinion that if they don’t get their way this November and then again in 2008, they’re going to be very inclined to give it a shot.

Frankly, I don’t know whether to be sad that the nation devolved to sectarian violence or be happy that the thing every leftist has cried about since before I was born is finally happening so that I can stop hearing them talk about how badly they want a ‘revolution’.

Our good man Rivrdog has a post up about this as well. He also warns about travel in Mexico. Go take a read.

  1. The American Leftists wouldn’t have a chance, for the simple reason that the military, or at least the vast majority of it, would side with the declared electoral winner.

Unlike the CSA, the Democratic People’s Republic of Kossackstan doesn’t have much in the way of guns, or much call on the loyalty of current and/or former soldiers.

Unless they decided to try some sort of mass, Gahndi-esque civil disobiedience, I don’t see them having even a faint chance of success.

Here’s another thought: we get a lot of oil from Mexico. If Mexico falls apart, do we send in the Marines to secure that oil supply?

  2. Rivrdog says:

HL, very thought-provoking. We DO get a lot of oil from MX, and of course, if it stopped, Hugo Chavez would probably try to cut us off from the 15% of our supply that we get from HIM as well. That would amount to an intolerable loss, and would have to be rectified within 30 days, because our Balkanized petroleuim distribution system would break down with an input shortage in that time.

    Could be a giant-killer, yes.
