Am I Missing Something Here

As you can probably tell, my blog and news reading isn’t what it once was. I’m about two days behind everyone else on the planet due to the move, but things are looking up. I’m completely over and done with the old Casa and into the new Casa and am beginning to unpack and put the “non-essential items” away.

My schedule should be back on track by the end of the week with the weekend acting as a well-placed buffer. I have a ton of links that are and have gotten old and stale and I a bit rude for not linking to more folk’s special happenings during this. “Out of It” is also a phrase I would use to describe this sort of blog-limbo I’ve been in, having to read and re-read nearly everything to make sure I haven’t left a key point somwhere in the ether.

So if you could, plase tell me if I’m not seeing something in this post I found at the dKos.

The title of the post is

Exxon Mobil Chief Is Against U.S. Energy Independence

And here is the quoted text from this MarketWatch article

The U.S. government is doing a disservice to the American public by suggesting the country can become energy-independent, especially since the country has oil and gas resources that are off-limits to development, Exxon Mobil Corp.’s top executive said Tuesday.

There are potential sources of supply in the U.S. where federal law prohibits drilling, including parts of the Rocky Mountains, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, offshore California and the hotly-debated Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Tillerson called it “irresponsible” for the government to withhold U.S. resources from its own people.

Now, I may be mistaken, but is just sounds to me as though the oil exec is talking about how the government repeats over and over that they want the US to be oil independant, but refuses to open up the currently “off-limits resources” that are known and readily available?

I see nothing in there where the guy says that we shouldn’t be oil independant or that we need to rely on foreign oil, do you?

Am I missing something or is Kos front-pager, SusanG an idiot?

  1. Did you know the government makes more off of each gallon of gasoline than the oil companies do. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=4599

I was amazed to see that.

So do you really think the government wants us to be “oil independent”?

  2. Analog Kid says:

Well Saint, from the info in your link, it doesn’t look as if the government cares where the oil comes from, whether it be foreign shores or off the Cali coast, just so long as they can tax it.

    Sounds like SOP to me.

So, what was your point with that?

  3. dagamore says:

You are not missing anything, all KOS posters are idiots. I think it is mostly due to that bs that they call Public education now days. Since people are no longer required to have any level of critical thinking, they are just required to regurgitate that liberal BS of the current teacher to pass. Most people either failed to develop the ability to be critical thinkers, or allowed it to wither and die on the vine.

Now, now, now. Certainly not all. They may all be uneducated mimics, but one or two may not be idiots. The point is that the government needs oil revenue and the oil companies may have less culpability than some members of Congress. Exxon is not evil. It may not be totally benevolent in its business practices, but it is not evil.

I don’t think Exxon is evil either. They invest huge amounts to research and development, oil exploration, and pay more money in taxes than they make in profits. Congress just sees Exxon and the rest of the oil companies profit levels and think: how can we get some of that money? Congress has failed to consistently look out for the best interest of the future of energy production in the US.

  7. oldhats says:

Did ya’ll know that 7 of the 10 biggest oil companies are (foreign) government-owned-national companies? ExxonMobile is the only American company on that list and it comes in at #5. That an American company can compete in that landscape is incredible…the last thing in the world we need is Congress to impose additional taxes, especially when, as SAINTKNOWITALL said, the government makes more off of each gallon of gasoline than the oil companies do.

  8. brooklyn315 says:

It is important to consider that American oil companies’ profits reflect their performance on a global scale, not just the United States. As you noted above, OLDHATS, ExxonMobile is among the top ten oil companies in the world, and their profits reflect their ability to compete in the global market. ExxonMobile’s profits are already taxed at a rate of over 38%, and imposing new taxes would only hinder their capacity to contend with foreign state-owned oil companies.

  9. oldhats says:

    Brooklyn,
Agreed! And not only would more taxes hurt their ability to compete in the global market, they’d hurt us (the consumer) at the pump…not a great outcome, imho.
