The Soundboard: The Dog Days of Winter Edition

I regret that it is my job to inform you that Jake, our Dachshund that I posted about last week at this time, passed away yesterday.

We were quite hopeful of his chances to keep on keepin’ on last weekm what with his lack of fuss in taking his anti-biotics, but as of Saturday, Jake was down to only eating one of his two daily meals and when he stopped eating altogether on Monday, we something was wrong. We to him to the vet the next morning and they said that his kidneys didn’t seem to want to go along with the plan, but that they wanted to keep him for the day to run some tests.

The tests showed that his heart murmur was lessening but again, his kidney function had gone down to 50%. The vet gave us some more meds to try and wake them up, but Jake still refused to eat Tuesday morning.

At 3am on Tuesday morning, Jake started to frequently vomit and when he could walk, he would do so in small circles, which, if you have ever had a sick pet, you know that is a very bad sign.

The vet said that the only thing he could was to keep Jake for the day and try some re-hydration from all the vomiting, but that it would probably have little to no and possibly a bad effect. It was then that we had to decide to have Jake put down. What with the pain he was probably going through by that time, and the rapidly worsening of his condition, it was the humane thing to do.

We sat with him as the doctor gave him the injection. He went very peacefully.

We made up a box for him and put his “Beef King” t-shirt and a 4-Pack of Hebrew National Beef Knockwurst franks in there along with his favorite pillow and went to the crematorium. The good folks there have helped out quite a few times in recent years.

We’ll have Jake back with us in the house by Saturday so that he can watch the big game with the wife on Sunday.

I was looking for another ‘Dog Oriented’ song for him for today, but ran aground until I remembered that one of the Blue Note artists, Big john Patton, wrote one just for him on his album Let ‘Em Roll.

And so today, I give you

Jakey – Big John Patton

While it is a swift moving song, the bass line reminds me of the way Jake used to hippety-hop run, which he can do now without the restrictions of weight or age.

Jake, you were a tough old son of a bitch (as he was a dog, that is quite a literal description and a compliment). You and I didn’t get along some of the time, but you made the Analog Wife very happy. And for that I thank you. So long, baby bubba.

    Damn,

Sorry for your loss, never easy to say goodbye to a member of the family.

  9. 3 years ago, we had a beagle named Kali. I noticed that she was a little “down” and not as playful. Something just didn’t seem right. So I took her to the vet. Nothing he could find except some tenderness in her rib cage. So he prescribed some pain medicine and antibiotics.

She seemed better while she was on the meds. But as soon as we stopped, she was back to being sad.

Eventually, we took her to the state veterinary university for a “cat” scan. Turned out is was bone cancer in her rib cage. We brought home her home and gave her pain medicine to keep her comfortable.

She was pretty good for several weeks and seemed to be getting around. But finally one day she just stopped eating and drinking. So we knew it was time.

As the “man” of the family I was elected to take her. It was the saddest time of my life.

As I was driving home, I swore not to get any more dogs so that I wouldn’t have to do this again.

Less than a week later, we had 2 new beagle pups. What a whimp I was.

I feel your pain. I really do.

Sorry to hear. The sign of a well lived life is how many dogs you have shared it with. They are wonderfully, even in memories.

    Peace.
