The Soundboard: Sucker for a Hook Series

Part 7: Quite possibly older than you

It’s Thursday again and here we are with another bit of tunage for you. This time, I’m taking the way-back machine for a spin.

Unless you’ve recently had your American Graffiti album or some of your Doo-Wop records out or tuned into oldies radio for an extended period of time, you might not have heard this one in a while. I tend to think of it as one of the very first tunes with a deeply embedded hook in it. Sure, there were hooky song before it, but this one was a quick setter with a barb on it.

I can’t remember when I first heard it, but I know that by the age of 12 I had an album with this song on it for when I needed a fix.

So, without further ado…..

Runaway – Del Shannon

PS: Speaking of being hooked, I think I’m addicted to fruit roll-ups now.

  1. “Older than” me?

    Not hardly.

Del Shannon was one of my favorite artists of the sixties.

It may interest you to know that Dennis Farina’s 1987 Television show “Crime Story” used this song as the theme during the intro. It’s still on my “Amazon.com Wish list”, along with “wiseguy” and “hill street blues”.

PS … in case you didn’t know, the typepad registration-to-comment thingie is a severe pain in the ass. Is their any way to turn it OFF???

I couldn’t remember if it was ‘Crime Story’ or ‘Police Story’ and I didn’t want to screw that up, but thanks for the reminder.

As for TypeKey, lets just say that I have something in the works.
