Crying Wolf

The following is a quote from an article in the Arizona Daily Star written about Arizona House Bill 2666 about concealed carry in the state:

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to let people carry weapons – including guns, grenades, rockets, mines and sawed-off shotguns – into schools, polling places and nuclear plants if they claim they’re only trying to protect themselves.

And like most of the firearms ignorant media, it has the highest amount of shock value that the autor thought he could get away with.

Kevin Smith at The Smallest Minority has a few pithy comments about this type of scare tactic at his place.

Another media tactic that makes me grind my teeth is when, awash in their ignorance, the media exaggerates on weapon types.

Recently, a two time felon and white supremacist was arrested for possession and the sale of weapons. There were close to 100 firearms in his house. He was also charged with possession of a fully automatic weapons, two illegally modified AK-47’s to be exact.

But when the local TV media used this story to top their evening news cycles, the number of “machine guns” had reached over 100.

And of course, if you didn’t listen carefully to the bottom of their news cycle the next night, you wouldn’t know that there were only two of them. And if you are like 70% of the public, you wouldn’t have known the difference anyway.

On a side note, none of the local left wing blogs that reported that story liked me stopping by and pointing out that none of the gun control laws, local or national, had been able to stop a two time felon and white supremacist from obtaining an gun collection that included illegal weapons.
