The Least He Has Earned

Joe Huffman reports that his nephew, Jason, who was wounded in Iraq, will be attending the State of the Union speech tonight in the gallery of Congress.

It is very good to hear that he is now well enough to travel.

Thank you and your family for your sacrifice, Jason.

Vote Your Conscience

Val at Babalu has a request that you go here and vote.

I did. And I doubt many of you will have a hard time figuring out which way.

RNS Quote of the Day

The entire structure of antitrust statues in this country is a jumble of economic irrationality and ignorance. It is the product of : (A) a gross interpretation of history, and (B) rather naive, and certainly unrealistic economic theories.

At last resort, some people argue that at least the antitrust laws haven’t done any harm. They assert that even though the competitive process itself inhibits coercive monopolies, there is no harm in making doubly sure by declaring certain economic action to be illegal.

But the very existence of those undefinable stautes and contradictory case law inhibits businessmen from undertaking what would otherwise be sound productive measures. No one will ever know what new products, processes, machines and cost saving mergers failed to come into existence, killed by the Sherman Act before they were born. No one can ever compute the price that all of us have paid for that Act which, by inducing less effective use of capital, has kept our standard of living lower than would otherwise have been possible.

How does that song go…?

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape,

You don’t spit into the wind,

You don’t pull the bars off of LT Smash,

And you don’t mess around with Slim.

Yeah, something like that!

I didn’t pull them off of him, but I did win them in the Valor-IT auction that Smash had set up during the pledge drive. He said that he has clusters now, so he didn’t need them and for a quick $25, they were mine.

After a bit of miscommunication during the holidays, they just showed up last week. I have absolutely no idea what I’ll do with them, but they do look good on my M14 bandolier right now.

Thanks again, Smash, and thanks to all who contributed to the Valor IT fund.

BTW, they’re still taking donations (hint, hint).

The Left found a way

To blame the US for Hamas’ victory in the PA ‘Elections’.

It was easy, they just buddied up with the Saudis

A confidential Saudi report prepared just weeks before the Palestinian elections predicted a Hamas victory in Gaza and the West Bank and puts the blame on the United States: “By failing to strengthen (President Mahmoud )Abbas’s position, the U.S. has paved the way for a Hamas victory,” states a document prepared by the Saudi National Security Assessment Project.

“Moreover, the U.S administration’s faith in the power of elections to transform people makes it oblivious to the possibility that the democratic process is often a double-edged sword which can have unintended consequences,” goes on to say the policy brief delivered last Dec. 27 by the SNSAP’s director, Nawaf Obaid.

Furthermore, the brief states that the U.S. failed to press “Abbas to implement his commitments to security and disarmament, and has not succeeded in convincing donor nations to fulfill their pledges for financial assistance to the Palestinians.”

Now, I’m not just pulling this out of my ass. I was listening to the Seattle Air America affiliate on Friday afternoon and heard Al Franken talking to Martin Indyk, former Clinton ambassador to Israel, current Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute.

Indyk was saying exactly that it was Bush’s trust in elections and his steadfast demand that they stay on schedule that caused Hamas’ win last week.

Maybe it was, but I seriously doubt that delaying the elections would have made them go off any smoother or changed the outcome.

The only reason I need to believe that is contained in this Cox and Forkum cartoon.

‘O’ stands for “Obvious”

It also stands for Oregon.

Tailgating cited as top driver error in crashes

Tailgating has become the top factor in highway crashes around Oregon, according to state officials.

Nearly a third of the crashes reported in 2004 were the result of rear-end collisions caused by drivers who were following too closely — 13,000 crashes out of a total 41,000 across the state, said Steve Vitolo, the Oregon Department of Transportation safety program manager.

Has this ever not been a top factor in the history of automobiles?

RNS Quote of the Day

It takes extraordinary skill to hold more than 50% of a large industy’s market in a free economy. It requires unusual productive ability, unfailing business judgement and unrelenting effort at the continuous improvement of one’s product and technique. The rare company which is able to retain its share of the market year after year and decade after decade does so by means of productive efficiency and deserves praise, not condemnation.

Kind of Strange, Kind of Creepy

So I went up to our storage unit this morning to put some things in. I go through the gate, to the building, open the door and enter the hallway of roll-up doors and I hear music.

And not just any music, but the saddest Billie Holiday song I have ever heard. The exact kind of song I would expect to hear from someone who was living in one of the units.

I wander up and down the hall to see if I can figure out which unit it may be coming from only to find that it is being piped into the hallway through recessed speakers from somewhere else.

OK. Kinda creeped out at the strangeness, but I start to unload my stuff from the truck anyway.

I’m putting the last load away and I hear footsteps. It’s the property manager doing his rounds. I mention the music and he said that the speakers were always there, but because it was low on the priorities list, it took them almost a year to figure out why they wouldn’t work.

I mentioned that they could play something a bit more upbeat as the last three tunes had been from a very strung out Holiday who couldn’t even make “Come Fly With Me” sound cheerful. He apologized and said that he thought it was mellow music to wake wake up to and that there usually wasn’t anyone around to listen at this time of the morning on a Sunday.

Aieeeee, lonely property manager listens to the most depressing Billie album to wake up? I’ll make sure not to stop by after dark from now on.

Sending them Camping

Run for the hills, I’ve just gotten word that the Bush’s internment camps are ready for occupation!

Oh wait, it’s just a post from the Portland IndymediaCenter.

Nevermind

Some of you may not know but there are concentration camps in the U.S. that are to be used for American citizens.

There are over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney generals signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft’s list. The Rex 84 Program was established on the reasoning that if a “mass exodus” of illegal aliens crossed the Mexican/US border, they would be quickly rounded up and detained in detention centers by FEMA. Rex 84 allowed many military bases to be closed down and to be turned into prisons.

If you need a laugh this morning, click the link and go read this twerp’s interpretations of a bunch of Executive Orders, a list of military bases or places “possibly under renovation” and almost a dozen IMC’ers freaking out over this BS.

What I find funny is not that they’re paranoid, but that these folks like to vote against the one thing that would keep a rogue government from fulfilling this scenario and they always vote for the massive public train transportation network (under the guise of ‘getting people out of their cars’) that would help complete this scenario.
