Firing up the base

Over at Salon, Rick Perlstein writes his tale of woe on the topics of Threepers, “Open Carry advocates”, and the phrase Molon Labe.

In other words, there is virtually no countervailing power to the now-hegemonic acceptance that there’s nothing much to do about the proliferation of guns in America. Democrats, as usual, gave an inch. The right, as usual, took a mile. And now we face the consequences.

Actually, as you well know, he faces no consequences and gets to claim victim status if he is robbed or assaulted. Unlike you and I, who face severe consequences if we walk through the wrong doorway or cross a state, county, or city boundary without knowing the minutiae of local firearms laws.

But no worries, his heart bleeds anyway.

Also, he gets to turn his fellow hoplophobes into fire-breathing fascists!

So At What Point Do We Actually Stand Up To The Gun Nuts?

Rick Perlstein writes about how Democrats completely surrendered our political will to control guns when the Obama administration backed away from the Bundy ranch. And I have to admit, he makes a good point. I assumed the feds would be back later — as in, a few weeks. How long has it been now? By the time anything actually happens, will it have any real deterrent effect?

But Perlstein doesn’t mention the big honkin’ elephant in the room: Namely, at what point does the federal government literally go to war with its own citizens? Because we’re not talking about bank robbers here, we’re talking about (mostly) non-criminal cranks — scofflaws and political malcontents. So what line has to be crossed in the good old U.S. of A. before we start mowing them down to make our point? Because you can’t talk about the Bundy ranch without talking about Ruby Ridge, and Waco.

So here’s the political corner into which we’ve painted ourselves.

Do we have the ATF and BLM agents roll up in armored tanks? Do we use drone strikes? I can see the administration’s reluctance to have that confrontation — after all, it’s not as if gun control advocates were flooding the White House switchboard, screaming to ‘take them out!’ And then we do have the militia types all over the country, just waiting for an excuse to start their own local uprising. These assholes want a civil war so bad, they can taste it.

Some days, I wonder: Should we let them, and just get it over with? You know, settle the burning question about whose is bigger.

Susie Madrak hits for the cycle in this one: She calls law-abiding firearms owners insane, gets to wish her political opponents dead, invokes Markley’s Law, all while claiming victim-hood status.

That’s why she is a front pager at Crooks and Liars!

Where Great Britain used to be

They’re signing up to go to war in Iraq

More Brits signing up to fight with jihadist militants in Iraq and Syria than for the UK Army Reserve

More British citizens signed up to fight in Iraq and Syria than joined the Army Reserve last year, it can be revealed.

Just 170 extra reservists enlisted over the past year – despite a Government target to boost the stand-by force by 11,000 by 2018.

But at the same time the brutal al-Qaeda inspired ISIS forces tearing through Iraq have been boosted by ‘several hundred’ Brits, ministers told MailOnline.

Terror experts believe there could be as many as 500 Brits fighting alongside the jihadists in the Middle East for ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria).

A senior government minister said: ‘There is a real problem about people going in and being radicalised and then coming home. There are several hundred who have gone from Britain that we know of. It is a worry.

But instead of doing something about it, like banning the jihadi’s return and scrapping their citizenship, they’re just content to sit back and “worry”.

Showing you care can take so little

Yet the Obama Administration can’t even come up with the effort.

Report: Polish Minister Says Country’s American Alliance is Worthless

Relations with Poland meant little during the Bush years. They mean absolutely nothing today. Kerry (and previously, Clinton) and their boss would rather snuggle up to the fascist leaders of Central and South America than worry about anything or anyone in Europe, you almost have to wonder if it’s because they’re melanin challenged?

Making themselves useful

The ACLU does something right for firearms owners

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO — Police Officer Jerry Bledsoe sent a written apology to Second Amendment advocate Jordan Klaffer, and agreed to pay damages,  court costs and attorneys’ fees. The Village of Kelso, where Bledsoe works, also assured Klaffer in writing that they will instruct police officers to not seek court orders to censor individuals who are critical of police officers’ actions. In response, today Klaffer and the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri asked the United States District Court to dismiss the First Amendment lawsuit filed in February on Klaffer’s behalf.

Klaffer is a gun rights advocate who frequently fires his weapons at objects on private property. On May 1, 2013, Jerry Bledsoe, a police officer, confronted Klaffer while responding to a noise complaint. Klaffer videotaped the interaction, where Bledsoe issued an ultimatum to Klaffer to surrender his guns or be arrested. Klaffer refused to give up his guns and was arrested for disturbing the peace.

To express his opinion that Officer Bledsoe was using his position to harass him for exercising his Second Amendment rights, Klaffer posted recordings of the encounter on social media and Officer Bledsoe retaliated by obtaining a court order that prevented Mr. Klaffer from posting videos, pictures, and text data criticizing Officer Bledsoe on the Internet.

“Government officials cannot abuse their power by ordering the censorship of material that is critical of their actions,” explains Tony Rothert, legal director of the ACLU of Missouri. “Censorship of criticism of police officers is an affront to the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech.”

And yet it will happen again tomorrow. And the day after that. And the day after that.

This is one of those things that officers and deputies think “can’t happen to them.”

When the facts are not on your side

Pay for your own facts.

The state spent almost half a million dollars on a flawed study of Gov. Pat Quinn’s now-defunct anti-violence program — the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative — after officials rejected a more rigorous evaluation that would have been free, auditors say.

The $498,351 study by the University of Illinois at Chicago didn’t even examine whether the program helped reduce violence, according to Auditor General William Holland’s office.

State Rep. David Reis, R-Willow Hill, said the study leaves taxpayers in the dark about whether the $54.5 million program made an impact in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the Chicago area.

“We don’t know whether this money was flushed down the toilet,” he said.

Trust me it was.

Why do I accuse them of trying to gin up some friendly numbers?

Auditors learned the state turned down an offer by the University of Chicago Crime Lab to conduct a more in-depth study for free.

It might not have turned out the way they wanted it to. It’s what anti-civil rights people do.

Sunday Funnies

Boy howdy! There sure was a lot for editorial cartoonists to draw this week.

And they didn’t disappoint.

Second Verse, Same as the First

The Great Unraveling

In one of the PBS series that engages American history (was it The American Experience? Frontline? I don’t remember and can’t find it online), the producers took a look back at the Carter administration. The show I’m thinking of would have been broadcast some 20 years ago.

Former Vice President Mondale was interviewed for the show. In a clip toward the end, Mondale recited a litany of woes that beset Carter as he (and they) stood for reelection: unemployment, inflation, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Iranian takeover of our embassy in Tehran, and so on.

In Mondale’s telling, these were like acts of God, the mysterious eruptions of of an indifferent universe. Yet in one way or another they could be traced to Carter administration policies. Mondale was of course clueless to the connection between left liberal policies and disaster. Unless its true object is the accrual of power to be exercised by a privileged elite, liberalism doesn’t “work” any more than socialism does.

To use an MSM term: “Surprisingly!”

And again with the “liberalism” descriptor. However, other than that, the post is pretty damn good. Not so “surprisingly.”

Intended Consequences?

I think they believe they are making room for more immigrants.

Record Numbers of Americans are Renouncing Their U.S. Citizenship

There are a large number of tax cheats and folks living abroad among the nearly 3000 people who dumped their citizenship last year and the just over 1000 who have already done so this year, but I’m certain that can’t be the only reason.

And, where are they all going?

Everyone in Oregon will be forced to live in a cave

Under the order of the Supreme Court of the State of Oregon.

At least, if the eco-socialists and their brainwashed minions have their way

Youth Win Reversal In Critical Climate Recovery Case

In a nationally significant decision in the case Chernaik v. Kitzhaber, the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled a trial court must decide whether the atmosphere is a public trust resource that the state of Oregon, as a trustee, has a duty to protect. Two youth plaintiffs were initially told they could not bring the case by the Lane County Circuit Court. The trial court had ruled that climate change should be left only to the legislative and executive branches. Today, the Oregon Court of Appeals overturned that decision.

Two teenagers from Eugene, Kelsey Juliana and Olivia Chernaik, filed the climate change lawsuit against Governor Kitzhaber and the State of Oregon for failing to protect essential natural resources, including the atmosphere, state waters, and coast lines, as required under the public trust doctrine. Their lawsuit asked the State to take action in restoring the atmosphere to 350 ppm of CO2 by the end of the century. The Oregon Court of Appeals rejected the defenses raised by the State, finding that the youth could obtain meaningful judicial relief in this case.

And because the world population is over 7,000,000,000, with the state of Oregon only containing 3,900,000 of those people, the state’s actions will merit exactly zero net effect.

Hence, they will have to order all industrial, commercial and residential activity to cease. Residents of the state will be allowed to exist, provided they move into a cave that is not currently occupied by wildlife. The only other option will be to emulate Professor Dumpster.

Enjoy that, Oregonians. You can move north or south. You could also move East, but since so few of you do so currently, I think that most will choose the up or down path.
