How tolerant

Somebody didn’t like my post about the Giant Palouse Earthworm yesterday. In fact, they got all kinds of huffy about it and called me three kinds of stupid.

So, [email protected] , since you specifically wrote in your comment for me to not respond in the comments, I’ll just post my reply here for your enjoyment.

This particular earthworm is not important. Earthworms in general are important. They do wonderful things for the soil so as to make it farmable. But seeing as how we been able to live without even the knowledge of this species for the entirety of our human existence, not to mention the limited amount of time available so far to study this species (please note that it has been found to exist in a heretofore unknown location), this one is not important.

It is doubly unimportant when you factor in all the land use restrictions encased within the classification of “Endangered”. For instance, farming could be forced to scale back, thereby knocking out entire regional economies.

All for an earthworm we didn’t know about until very recently.

I remember just a few years ago when the eco-socialists attempted to shut the USMC Camp Pendleton rifle training range using some supposedly rare sand gnat that would be harmed by the mere presence of humans. Luckily, the military was able to get the courts to tell the whiners that national security was not going to be sacrificed for an insect.

Yes, “The Global Warming Myth”. Anthropomorphic global warming is a lie promoted by those who seek to gather power using an invisible boogey man. There is no conclusive evidence of AGW from any reputable source who is not profiting in some way from the issue. In contrast, people have lost jobs, grant funding, been castigated from their professions and equated to deniers of the Holocaust merely for presenting evidence to the contrary.

Which is telling, seeing as how those are similar to the tactics as you used in your comment yesterday: You have no evidence for your opinion, so you relied entirely upon name-calling and flamboyantly stuffing your head in your ass, removing it only to spew yet another epithet.

You should really stop doing that, as it will eventually make your ears stick out like Barack Obama’s. I mean, how did you think his got that way?

They should hold a raffle

They could use the proceeds to recover the costs of his trial

Convicted sniper John Allen Muhammad asks prosecutors in a letter for help to put an end to his legal appeals from death row.
Muhammad says in the letter released Tuesday that he is waiving all rights to appeal his 2003 conviction and death sentence for the sniper killings in 2002 that terrorized the Washington, D.C., region.

Muhammad says he has tried without success to stop efforts by his defense lawyers, and that he is counting on the state attorney general to assist him.

Muhammad’s appellate lawyer, Jonathan Sheldon, declined comment. Muhammad’s lawyers in a federal court appeal cite evidence of brain damage that may render Muhammad incompetent to make legal decisions on his own behalf.

You have to be more than a bit deranged to commit the crimes he did, but if he can consciously decide to pull a trigger, he should be able to consciously be able to decide to stand in front of a trigger as well.

Isn’t socialized medicine great!

It’s so free that it hurts

More than 100 Canadian women with high-risk pregnancies have been sent to United States hospitals over the past year – in what a doctors’ group attributes to the lack of a national birthing plan.

The problem has peaked, with British Columbia and Ontario each sending a record number of women to U.S. neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Specifically, 80 B.C. women have been sent to U.S. hospitals since April 1, 2007; in Ontario, 28 have been sent since January of 2007, according to figures from the respective health ministries.

Andr Lalonde, executive vice-president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, said the problem is due to bed closings that took place almost a decade ago, the absence of a national birthing initiative and too few staff.

“Neonatologists are very stretched right now,” Dr. Lalonde said in a telephone interview from Ottawa. “We’re so stretched, it’s kind of dangerous.”

Without the US’s capitalist medical system, these children would quite probably be dead. I don’t mind helping out here, really, I don’t mind. But isn’t it time we got some damn recognition for this instead of being browbeaten at every turn?

Rank does have its priviliges

While doing some research, I ran across this fun fact:

In Westminster, members of Parliament are not allowed to eat or drink in the chamber. The exception to this rule is the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who is allowed to drink alcohol while delivering the budget.

I’d imagine it takes the edge off.

Don’t Dam Him

He’s doing the right thing.

Buffett rebuffs Klamath dam protesters

American Indians and salmon fishermen who had hoped to earn a private audience with billionaire Warren Buffett failed to win much support Saturday for removing four dams along the Klamath River.

Buffett again told the protesters that his company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc., won’t decide the fate of the dams its PacifiCorp utility owns. Instead, Berkshire will defer to regulators in California and Oregon, where the Klamath runs, and to federal officials.

Buffett also said he promised regulators when Berkshire bought PacifiCorp in 2006 that he wouldn’t interfere with that utility’s operating decisions.

The protesters, who were making their second trip to Berkshire’s meeting, have promised to keep the pressure on Buffett and his Omaha-based company until they achieve their goal of dam removal or at least win an audience.

“We feel like we’ve been listened to everywhere except PacifiCorp,” said Leaf Hillman, a member of the Karuk Tribe.

That is part of the joy of being a private individual, Hillman; you can tell loser to go stuff it.

Hell, I wouldn’t even have been kind about it.

These tribemembers want the dams removed, causing 1,700,000 people in six states to have to find a new way to make their lights come on for the sole reason that their tribes can make more money fishing.

And they’re probably still calling Buffett the greedy capitalist.

Not a big surprise

Rob at the SayAnything blog got an email from an anonymous reader who is a student at North Dakota’s Williston State College. The student is required to write an essay paper for his English Composition class.

The topic: Do you agree or disagree with the idea of government sponsored health care

Sounds easy enough, right? Well, there’s a twist

I have to write a paper about whether or not I agree with government sponsored heath care. But the thing is that I have to support my argument with the sources supplied to me. And all of the information supplied to me is basically FOR government sponsored health care. Is it fair that I have to write a paper arguing something that I don’t agree with?

So far the only thing in the information given to me that is against it states “No literal reading of the US Constitution acknowledges any right to heath care.” I can’t support a personal opinion with out correct documentation. As I am not provided any documents that support that opinion, I can’t really buck the system and pass.

About the only thing I can do is suggest that the student contact FIRE (watch their video at the link), but that may not be quick enough.

Any other suggestions?

More Low Lifes

But this time, istead of being in north central Idaho, they’re in north central Washington.

Back at the beginning of March I posted this about a group of enviro-whackos trying to get the Giant Palouse Earthworm classified as an Endangered Species by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The worm can grow up to three feet long and is able to spit at attackers and, if you listen to the eco-socialists, only exists in central Idaho.

At least until last weeks discovery

The giant Palouse earthworm is still among the Northwest’s rarest inhabitants, but two new discoveries suggest the native wigglers might be a bit more abundant than previously thought.

A pair of pinkish-white worms from opposite margins of the Columbia River basin appear to be members of the species, reputed to grow up to 3 feet long.

In March, researchers digging in a remnant of native prairie near Moscow, Idaho, accidentally minced one of the creatures and collected the bits. The rolling grasslands of the region, called the Palouse, are believed to be the species’ historic habitat.

But the second worm came from a more surprising location: a forested slope above the Chelan County town of Leavenworth.

“If it is the correct species, it’s pretty exciting to find it in an area where it hasn’t been described before,” said University of Idaho soil scientist Jodi Johnson-Maynard, who has been stalking the giant earthworm for years. “Maybe it’s not just tied to the prairie.”

Aww, yes! They must be free range worms.

I’m sure this is going to be a crushing blow to the conspiratorial Noah Greenwald who saw the denial of an “Endangered” classification as coming directly from George Bush’s desk. And I am also positive that Greenwald made up a pantomime depicting W opening up a closet in the Oval Office and putting a mark in the “Bit the Dust” column of his dry-erase board.

How egotistical of Greenwald to think that he knew everything about a worm that was only just discovered a few years ago.

But hey, without their egos and self-hate, we wouldn’t have the Global Warming myth.

When I read this, I immediately thought of John McCain.

Is that wrong?

A New Round of Stupid

A Professor at UC-Merced has published some new photos of Hiroshima, post A-bomb.

These photographs, taken by an unknown Japanese photographer, were found in 1945 among rolls of undeveloped film in a cave outside Hiroshima by U.S. serviceman Robert L. Capp, who was attached to the occupation forces. Unlike most photos of the Hiroshima bombing, these dramatically convey the human as well as material destruction unleashed by the atomic bomb. Mr. Capp donated them to the Hoover Archives in 1998 with the provision that they not be reproduced until 2008.

The HuffPo has published them, leading to another typical cycle of anti-American wailing and gnashing of teeth about the decision to save over a million lives while at the same time bringing an end to WWII.

Second comment down, RFBorjal

The question should now be asked:

Which was worse? 9/11 or Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

The 3,000 or so who perished at the World Trade Center were unarmed civilians. So were the hundreds of thousands who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The atomic bombing of Japan could not be described other than as a terroristic act. It was meant to terrorize the Japanese into submission. And it worked.

And everyone ganged up on Rev. Jeremiah Wright when he asserted that the American government was guilty of terrorism?

Now, we have the gruesomely graphic proofs for all Americans to see.

I suspect that the moderators will be shutting that thread as quickly as they do one involving Cheney.

The photos are graphic, so don’t be clicking these links at home in front of the kids.
