Looks far, doesn’t it? The closest targets are no longer placed along the “creek” near the van as in the photo above; instead they’re at the treelined berm, 385 yards out. And it gets tougher from there as they go up the hill behind.

Nickels goes full speed ahead

Mayor Greg Nickels is going forward with a controversial executive order which would ban “dangerous weapons” – including firearms – on Seattle owned parks and properties. An exact date has not been set yet for when the ban will go into effect. However, a spokesman for the Mayor’s office said the ban is currently expected to begin sometime in May.

Coincidentally, this places the time somewhere around the one-year anniversary of the freak shooting incident at Folklife, last year, that left two people injured and was the casus belli for the order.

The move also comes in spite of legal concerns questioning whether the city can unilaterally prohibit firearms owners, particularly those possessing Concealed Pistol Licenses, from exercising their legal rights.

A damn fine article from Dan Ward of the Seattle Weekely. Pretty much straight down the middle, factual reporting.

I know, imagine that in Seattle.

The Schenectady PD might not even be minutes away

Schenectady Police Chief Mark Chaires said, “This is unprecedented – all these officers getting in trouble at the same time for all these different reasons.

Five Schenectady police officers recently accused of everything from driving drunk to beating up a man are leading city officials to look at taking drastic action to fix a department tainted by the few who may have acted illegally, like Darren Lawrence and Michael Brown who are accused of driving while intoxicated.

…..

But it’s not just the threat of termination. Mayor Stratton told us he’s looking at all options, including disbanding the police department – basically starting over.

“It’s something we’re certainly looking into. I think the public has had it up to here,” said the mayor.

Currently, officials are reviewing the legal options and planning to present a full report in early April – options like a consolidated county-wide police force or bringing in the State Police.

The mayor said there is another option – and that would be declaring martial law. The governor would have to declare it and then the National Guard would come in. The mayor said it’s more for a transition to a new police force if that were to happen.

What happens when you call 911 and no one answers?

The poor folks of Schenectady may just soon find out.

She’s a real winner!

The 16yr old who was hit and kicked while in a holding cell by a King County Sheriff’s Deputy last month has made the news again.

Unsurprisingly, it is not in a good way

A teenage girl known for a video of her beating in a SeaTac jail cell is facing new charges in King County Juvenile Court.

Malika Calhoun pleaded not guilty Wednesday to harassment and trespassing.

The 16-year-old is accused of threatening to shoot another girl Feb. 2 at the Southcenter mall in Tukwila. The Seattle Times reports she had earlier been warned to stay away from the mall.

Lovely child her parent’s raised.

What the Deputy did to her was wrong. He should be punished beyond just losing his job (and Sheriff Sue Rahr should be investigated for making the decision to put him back on the street).

But I am sure that I’m not the only one who believes that this girl will know how to properly accessorize an orange jumpsuit for the rest of her life.

My New Neighbors

So we’re taking advantage of the collapsing commercial real-estate market to expand our offices. One of the offices we’re moving to (and the one in which I will spend most of my time) is on the ground floor of a Class A four-story office building. It’s quite nice, although a bit worn.

Anyway, today my secretary was talking with the building manager making arrangements for our move in a few weeks and he casually mentioned that the fourth floor was completely off-limits and barricaded. Why? It’s the local HQ for the ATF. Apparently they generally keep to themselves, but on occasion they’ll haul in all sorts of ordnance captured from a raid. Once UPS dropped off a large shipment of ammunition at the front door and the manager had to run up to the fourth floor to ask them to come get it as it was quite heavy.

It kind of makes sense they’d be there because the building is very close to Camp Parks, the local military base at which I was told there are several shooting ranges (including one at 300 yards) used by .mil types as well as local law enforcement. Also the Project WESTFORD Radio Telescope, above.


All in all, having these folks as neighbors should be fun!
