A massive natural-gas discovery here in northern Louisiana heralds a big shift in the nation’s energy landscape. After an era of declining production, the U.S. is now swimming in natural gas.
Even conservative estimates suggest the Louisiana discovery — known as the Haynesville Shale, for the dense rock formation that contains the gas — could hold some 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That’s the equivalent of 33 billion barrels of oil, or 18 years’ worth of current U.S. oil production. Some industry executives think the field could be several times that size.
“There’s no dry hole here,” says Joan Dunlap, vice president of Petrohawk Energy Corp., standing beside a drilling rig near a former Shreveport amusement park.

Energy lobbyists count as many as 11 Democrats on the 36-member subcommittee either on the fence or in opposition to the measure. Because Republicans are likely to vote in unanimity or one vote short of it against the measure, most of those wavering Democrats would have to be convinced to support the bill for it to pass.
Three main issues have divided the group: One, how many emissions allowances should industries like electric utilities receive for free, versus how many should be sold at auction? Two, how quickly should polluters be required to reduce their emissions? And three, to what extent should power plants be forced to use renewable energy sources like wind and solar power to produce electricity?
President Obama’s climate proposal, included in his budget blueprint, requires utilities and other industries to purchase all their credits. That would provide an immediate price signal that would quicken development of technologies to cut emissions.
Critics say the only immediate consequence would be a sharp increase in energy costs.

After a shooting at last year’s Northwest Folklife Festival left three people injured, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels vowed to outlaw guns in city buildings, parks and Seattle Center.
The proposal has languished for almost a year, with the state Attorney General’s Office saying the mayor lacks the authority to prohibit guns on city property, a Second Amendment group threatening to sue and questions continuing as to what the policy would really accomplish.
With another Northwest Folklife approaching on Memorial Day weekend, a spokesman for Nickels said the mayor is moving ahead with an executive order this spring and is prepared to defend it in court.
Even if the order is not in place, the May 22-25 festival will be gun-free through the city’s lease with festival organizers. Signs posted at the Seattle Center event will remind people not to bring guns, and security will be trained to take firearms away or ask people to leave, says Alex Fryer, a Nickels spokesman.
The new city order would apply even to people who have a state permit allowing them to carry a concealed weapon. Without a permit, it’s already illegal in Washington to carry a concealed weapon in public.
Fryer said the city’s parks are already safe, but he pointed out that the shooter at last year’s Folklife Festival had a permit to carry his weapon.
“We believe that our parks and community centers and open spaces are safer without guns,” Fryer said.
So do the criminals, Mr. Fryer. So do the criminals.
While I wouldn’t wish that someone would sneak a gun into the property, you know and I know, that someone will. And if they get the urge to do something “bad” in this newly created gun free zone, something “bad” will happen. And it will happen repeatedly until someone else with a gun shows up or the murderer runs out of ammunition.
If the parks and community centers are “safer without guns”, are they going to disarm the Seattle Police Officers and King County Sheriff Deputies who work security for the event? And if not, doesn’t that poke a big gaping hole into his position? After all, the community of CCW holders has a lower rate of illegal activity than the LEO community.
But why stick to facts when you can make-believe you’re starting a little gun-free utopia?

The Australian government says it is to spend more than $72bn (£48bn) upgrading its military over the next two decades.
Key purchases include 100 fighter jets and 12 new submarines, replacing the current fleet of six.
Eight frigates and 24 combat helicopters are also on the list, set out in the country’s first defence white paper for 10 years.
The government says it will enable Australia to defend its interests in a changing Asia-Pacific region.
The white paper is entitled: “Defending Australia in the Asia-Pacific Century; Force 2030”.
The 12 new hunter-killer submarines – which will be built in Australia – will double the size of the current fleet.
One hundred F-35 fighters will be purchased over the next decade, and funds will also be allocated to counter cyber and electronic warfare.

President Bush. I met him personally and liked him very much. He was honest and straightforward, and that is very important. I may not have agreed with all his policies, but I thought he was very honest and a very good leader.
I’m sure that if he keeps this up, the left will find a way to put him on trial for war crimes too.

Seattle’s experiment with hybrid only cabs is failing
A year ago, it seemed as if Green Cab Taxi had won the golden ticket–or, to be precise, the golden licenses. King County, which hadn’t issued a new taxi license in 17 years, agreed to give away 50 of them to a fledgling, mostly Ethiopian-run company that had agreed to adopt new eco- and labor-friendly policies in a sometimes-abusive industry. Other competing cabbies were incensed at the way Green Cab won the coveted licenses and sued. Yet now Green Cab stands on the verge of financial ruin.
..Green Cab itself can’t get drivers, according to Aboye. He notes that the company is obliged to operate differently than other cab companies. Most cabbies are self-employed. They either own a license or lease a taxi from someone who owns one. But the county, trying to ensure that drivers could earn a living wage and benefits without being subject to the whims of license owners, mandated that the new company be run according to a traditional employer-employee relationship. Green Cab would pay drivers regular salaries and allow them the opportunity to unionize.
Just a little bit more background information on the malfunctional cab situation in the greater Seattle area:
First, you cannot flag one down. It is illegal for the driver to stop for you if you attempt to do so. You have to call their phone center, who send the job to a dispatcher, who sends it to the cars and the first car to accept it gets the fare.
Secondly, the major commercial/passenger airport in King County, Sea-Tac Airport, has their own taxi service: STITA. They are the only ones allowed to pick up at Sea-Tac. They are also not allowed to collect fares outside of the airport’s boundaries. So each trip is a dead-head return for them once they leave. And for the other taxi companies, each fare taken to the airport is a dead-head until another fare calls in.
STITA is subsidized by the King County government. That is the only way they can stay in business.
The other companies scrape by.
But these bad business models won’t be shown for what they are. I fully expect Mayor Nickels and the City Council to vote to “buy back” some of the taxi licenses, at a higher than average price, to help Green Taxi keep the lights on. Since they won’t have licenses for them, Green taxi will then have to sell their high mileage Prius’ to the highest bidder. My guess is that The City of Seattle will buy them, at above market price, to beef up their fleet of parking enforcement cars.
All of this money was wasted in the name of Gaia.
But don’t worry, I’m sure this was just a glitch. After all, Nickels wants to tack on an average of $49 extra per year to the city’s property tax levy to pay for more “affordable housing”.
That couldn’t have been mismanaged at all, could it?
This guy gets out of the punishment
Tom Riall, the chief executive of Britain’s largest speed camera firm, has been arrested for driving at more than 100mph in Norwich.
Mr Riall was photographed doing 102mph in his 2.7 litre Volvo on a 70mph stretch of the A11 as he travelled to a business meeting.

Anyone caught doing more than 100mph faces a driving ban of up to two years and a £2,500 fine.
The story at the link quotes him admitting to the high speed run, but Riall guy is not going to swing in the same way an average citizen would.
He knows all the excuses and I wouldn’t be surprised if one of his employees “finds” that the camera set-up was “miscalibrated” and he was only doing somewhere between 95 and 99mph.
