I just hope that there is a “sucker” born every minute. The more folks who believe in actual free markets the sooner we can put freaks like Bloom out of a job and out to pasture.
One of the response lines for why everyone should be mandated to have coverage is that if people have a regular GP, they’ll go to the doctor instead of the emergency room. They also add that this will cut costs and reduce waiting times.
Gov. Patrick’s assertion that emergency department visits in Massachusetts decreased after enactment of universal coverage is incorrect. A study just published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine shows a 9% increase in emergency room visits since the commonwealth’s universal health-care plan was signed into law in 2006. We are all for cutting health-care costs, but not in emergency medical services, as they account for only 3% of all health-care spending and are already struggling under an increasing burden of uncompensated care.
While the American College of Emergency Physicians supports universal health-care coverage, please do not perpetuate the myth that universal coverage will decrease emergency department visits. The evidence clearly says otherwise.
So, to summarize:
Strike 1: Universal coverage does not lower ER visits
Strike 2: Universal coverage does not cut costs
Strike 3: Universal coverage does not reduce wait times
Can we call the proponents of universal coverage and mandated coverage “OUT” now, please?

The UN loves Obama because he is weak
Barack Obama’s Gallup approval rating of 52 percent may well be lower at this stage of his presidency than any US leader in recent times with the exception of Bill Clinton. But he is still worshipped with messiah-like adoration at the United Nations, and is considerably more popular with many of the 192 members of the UN than he is with the American people.

It is not hard to see why a standing ovation awaits the president at Turtle Bay. Obama’s popularity at the UN boils down essentially to his willingness to downplay American global power. He is the first American president who has made an art form out of apologizing for the United States, which he has done on numerous occasions on foreign soil, from Strasbourg to Cairo. The Obama mantra appears to be – ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do to atone for your country. This is a message that goes down very well in a world that is still seething with anti-Americanism.
It is natural that much of the UN will embrace an American president who declines to offer strong American leadership. A president who engages dictators like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez will naturally gain respect from the leaders of the more than 100 members of the United Nations who are currently designated as “partly free†or “not free†by respected watchdog Freedom House.

It takes slightly more than three gallons of liquid cow manure to create one kilowatt-hour of electricity.
A lot of poop. A small amount of electricity. A big environmental boost to a dairy farmer.
A fledgling anaerobic manure digester is now running at roughly 80 percent capacity near Rexville in southwestern Skagit County. The plant produced its first power on Aug. 30 and will host Gov. Chris Gregoire at a ceremony next Monday.
The digester accepts the liquid manure in a big holding tank, where it gives off methane gas that is then burned to produce electricity.
It is the first or fourth of its kind in Washington – depending on how you catalog the device. Ferndale-based Andgar Corp. built all four.
I’m still trying to figure out why they didn’t build the first one in Olympia. With all the bullshit coming out of my state’s capital, we wouldn’t be needing to worry about the coming rate increase because of California’s “Green Energy†mandates.

Escalation is a bad idea. The Democrats backed themselves into defending the idea of Afghanistan being The Good War because they felt they needed to prove their macho bonafides they called for withdrawal from Iraq. There have been many campaign promises “adjusted” since the election. There is no reason that the administration should feel any more bound to what they said about this than all the other committments [sic] it has blithely turned aside in the interest of “pragmatism.”
They’re feeling let down over the multiple broken promises from President Obama and now want one he made to win the hawks over broken, no matter the human cost.
Just like in Iraq, the left doesn’t care about the day to day lives of brown people so long as the Democrats get their domestic social agenda passed.

Wellford, South Carolina has much easier pickings.
The Mayor of Wellford is defending her policy which bans police officers in that city from chasing suspects. Sallie Peake says the policy also includes vehicle chases along with pursuits on foot.
A memo issued on September 2nd from Peake to all Wellford officers reads:
“As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever.“
WSPA first reported the mandate on Wednesday after an anonymous citizen faxed a copy of the memo to our newsroom.
Peake was out of town and unavailable for comment. On Friday, reporter Chris Cato caught up with her in her office and questioned her about the origin of the policy. Peake says she issued the mandate because several officers have been injured during chases, driving up insurance costs for the town.
Because their insurance rates are more important than law and order.
I would like to thank the Academy of Left Wing Dunces for this wonderful pronouncement. I wouldn’t have been able to call myself wealthy without their pathetic attempt to find a way to pay for their insipid socialized health care plan.
So I’ve been following the Tea Party objections to the health care reform efforts. They’re worried about the deficit, they just want to be left alone without government interference, and they’re especially angry at the government singling out some privileged groups for special subsidies. They’re proud, self-sufficient patriots and they don’t want handouts.

I’ve discovered a regressive tax break that favors the wealthy and has no good rationalization for its continued use. (According to historians, it was an accident, anyway.) And oddly enough, it costs us about $100 billion annually, or $1 trillion over ten years – exactly the estimated cost of healthcare reform. Really, there’s no other word for it but “pork.”
It’s the mortgage interest deduction.
No, it doesn’t seem like a huge deal. (A lot of the people eligible for it don’t even bother, because you have to itemize your tax return.)
I’m going to spend today and this evening letting my friends and co-workers know that they’re wealthy as well, since one of the first things nearly all of them told me when The Wife and I bought Firebase Blue was how much we were going to love our first ten or so tax returns.

Health officials ordered an investigation on Thursday into why the Canadian government sent body bags to an Aboriginal reserve in Manitoba after community leaders requested assistance to deal with an expected outbreak of swine flu.
The body bags were sent this week to a remote northern reserve that was hard hit by swine flu last spring. The bags were in a shipment of hand sanitisers and face masks.
