The gravity in Oz is normal

And hopefully, these words won’t fall on deaf ears

In the wake of the December 15 hostage situation in which an armed man held unarmed Australians at gunpoint for hours, former Sydney Deputy Mayor Nick Adams is calling for a gun ban to be lifted so Australians can defend themselves.

Adams said he believes if there was ever a time Australians wanted to have a gun, it was December 15.

He told Fox News that he thinks gun laws will soon be revisited–that “Australians are now beginning to realize what it is for the bad guys to have guns and for the good people not to.” He said a lot of Australians woke up when the crisis was over and thought about how different things “could have been if someone did have a gun on them to stop this terrible, awful ordeal.”

Ending firearms prohibition in Australia should be their new #1 priority now that they got the greens out and got their eco-socialism laws repealed.

Getting the band up and running

I’m still making almost daily trips to the place that tests architectural designs, though I’m not always working on the seismic wall. We’re currently waiting for “The Pros” to finish dragging their heels getting their piece set into the frame for testing before it gets sealed up. Sometimes they need me that day. Sometimes not.

I’m not getting paid by the hour while I wait. I am, instead, getting paid by the piece as I fabricate projects for them. Today, was a bandsaw stand.

Its your average metal bandsaw. It weighs some 725lbs dry and is supposed to be bolted to the floor. These guys have a lot of space, but not enough space to actually do what they do, so things have to be able to be moved about the shop depending on whether they are needed that day or not.

When I arrived this morning, the bandsaw was on it’s usual mount of sorts: A custom cut pallet sitting on four movers dollys. This had sufficed for a number of years, but was nowhere near safe and was always in need of some type of repair (new pallet or something to do with the wheels). This last week, two wheels failed and it was being supported on one end by a hydraulic floor jack.

And so I was asked how I’d get this done. I answered by telling them that I saw some steel perfect for the job on their scrap rack and I’d be about three or four hours to measure, cut, drill, tack, test fit, weld and install. Paint would be another hour because it is cold.

The thumbs up was given and off I went.

Boom!

That’s 1in x 3.5in bar welded to 1.5in x 4in channel. I’d have made the whole thing out of channel, but they didn’t have enough. Heavy duty. Especially the heavy part. I slotted the holes since getting an exact measurement wasn’t easy. That took the longest.

Locking casters and caster pads were ordered from a place in an adjoining industrial park and delivered. A couple of hours later.

Boom!

I’m quite happy with it. Those casters are da bomb.

The bossman left before I got done with it but I told him he’d have a new stand when he came in the next morning. I should be getting an email around 830 telling me how close I came to expectations.

As if things weren’t bad enough

Leftists have thrown some numbers together to make things sound even worse.

If you live in the United States, there is a good chance that you are now living in poverty or near poverty. Nearly 50 million Americans, (49.7 Million), are living below the poverty line, with 80% of the entire U.S. population living near poverty or below it.

That near poverty statistic is perhaps more startling than the 50 million Americans below the poverty line, because it translates to a full 80% of the population struggling with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on government assistance to help make ends meet.

In September, the Associated Press pointed to survey data that told of an increasingly widening gap between rich and poor, as well as the loss of good-paying manufacturing jobs that used to provide opportunities for the “Working Class” to explain an increasing trend towards poverty in the U.S.

Because times are tough, and the government might cut some “anti-poverty programs” in the not too distant future, the AP feels the need to fail at statistics so as to be as shocking as possible.

Of course, none of this is has anything to do with six years of Democratic Party rule. It is all the fault of those small government types.

On the Job!

How’s that TSA working for you, America?

Delta employee charged with helping smuggle guns onto plane

The FBI and New York police held a news conference to discuss the latest on an airline security breach involving a Delta employee facing federal charges.

Police say more than 150 guns were illegally smuggled from Atlanta to New York on more than a dozen trips. Channel 2’s Rachel Stockman broke the news Monday that a former Delta employee at Hartsfield-Jackson is accused of using his clearance to help smuggle the guns.

Investigators believe those guns made it on to 20 different flights.

Stockman obtained a mugshot of Eugene Harvey from a previous arrest for simple battery. He was found not guilty, but the College Park native is now facing more serious charges of gun trafficking.

Channel 2 was first to obtain a copy of the arrest affidavit and Tuesday afternoon police briefed reporters.

“They put guns on the plane this time. They could have easily put a bomb on one of those planes ,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson.

Of course, now we will get to hear about a new round of security measures proposed by the federal government.

Which won’t work. But there’ll be a a few thousand more federal employees and it’ll cost more to fly so that people “feel” safer.

I can think of a few other individuals with megaphones that should have been drawn into this panel.

What Else Must Be True For This To Be True?

Mark Bennett’s take on the UVA story is a very good one.

As a criminal-defense lawyer, I ask three big questions when trying to get to the truth of a story:

•    What else must be true for this to be true?
•    What if things had gone a little differently?
•    What’s really going on here?

What else must be true for this story to be true? Each of these twelve people who knew what happened to Jackie that night must have valued his or her own interest above the principle that men shouldn’t rape women.

Somebody Failed

The Analogy Crafting portion of her Critical Thinking course.

Namely, Heather “Digby” Parton who writes at Salon.

Her analogy compares open carry and other pro-firearms civil rights actions, like the I-594 protest, to a Muslim Sharia-advocacy group calling themselves “The Sword of the Prophet” open carrying loaded rifles outside of Sunday church services.

Because one group simply wanting their rights to possess and trade their tools freely restored is the same as a group that wants to legalize slavery and the wanton murder of those who won’t submit to their religious belief.

“Digby” is supposed one of the smarter ones from the leftosphere to have made it into a paying gig.

I weep for their future.

Singled Out

Because of their race.

At a time when racial tensions are running high, students at a Texas college are upset because a controversial assignment called ‘White Privilege’ given by a professor at Lone Star College – Tomball campus.

The assignment was a ‘White Privileges’ worksheet given in an online course.

…..

The worksheet included statements like: ‘I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed,’ ‘If a traffic cop pulls me over or if the IRS audits my tax return, I can be sure I haven’t been singled out because of my race,’ and ‘I can turn on the television or open the front page of the paper and see people of my race being well represented.’

The student did not want to be identified for fear of backlash from the professor and told KPRC that he hopes the professor will re-think the assignment.

…..

The professor has not commented publicly about the assignment but the college released a statement saying the assignment was a ‘supplemental’ exercise with no point value.

Of course, there was no question on the paper that asked “I can attend a public college without fear of being singled out for harassment by my instructors because of my race.”

Maybe next time.
