RNS Quote of the Day, 05/14/15: Generation of Morons

Oh, it’s huge. It’s huge. I saw higher education as a student and as a professor. Two different worlds. Back then, we worked 12 hours a day. Getting through college was extraordinarily hard work. We looked at people who worked eight hours a day as loafers. The idea, the hijinks that go on in college today go on really only because students don’t have to work. You were very lucky to get a C. A C was an average grade. A grade to be proud of.

Now grade inflation and that has taken hold, and the amount of work that I can demand as a professor of students dropped through the floor. Standards have dropped through the floor. We are graduating semi-literates. The only remaining bastions of serious education are in the technical fields. Strictly technical fields. There are all sorts of courses out there that purport to be technical and they are not.

The level of preparation of students coming into college is abysmal, literary and scientific. It’s a different world. We’re educating a generation of morons.

In all honesty

I can’t say that I was going to see it anyway.

But now, not even for a $1 RedBox

“Mad Max: Fury Road” consultant, Eve Ensler, calls it a feminist action film

Eve Ensler, the playwright and feminist known best for writing the 1996 play The Vagina Monologues, was brought onto the film as a consultant by Miller in order to avoid creating the usual stock versions of abused characters and to help the female stars better understand their roles. Together with Ensler, who has worked with women living in some of the harshest conditions, the female cast members did extensive research into the experiences of women who had gone through severe trauma.

The feminist overtones of Mad Max: Fury Road have been mentioned in many of the reviews, which so far have been overwhelmingly positive. Ahead of the film’s general release later this week, a new featurette focusing on the wives has been released, and in an interview with Time Ensler described Mad Max: Fury Road as a “feminist action film.”

Because you don’t want to get the dogma wrong whilst the RadFems are watching.

Cali Water Debunking

I love it when I find a fine analytical mind like Scott’s has done my work for me.

Hell, my entire neighborhood has nice green lawns. Civil disobedience, bitches!

But have no doubt

The progressive left will never see this group of people want to keep more of their own money as “greedy”.

Public school teachers in the city are supposed to save 9 percent of each paycheck in their own retirement account. But for 34 years taxpayers have picked up most of the tab, thanks to a perk in the contract with the Chicago Teachers Union.

In the latest round of contract negotiations, Chicago Public Schools officials reportedly sought to end that practice. Union officials stated they were “highly insulted” by the proposal, deeming it unreasonable because “CPS agreed in 1981 to pay for 7 percent of the 9 percent of each CTU member’s pension contribution in lieu of a raise the board said it couldn’t afford at that time.”

I am certain that raises have been given since which were larger than the 7% the CTU was looking for in 1981. Now would be a good time to set things back right again, no?

Apparently not.

“We note that the state law requiring full funding of annual pension payments beginning in 2016 applies not only to Chicago but to a number of overlapping taxing districts such as Chicago Public Schools, Cook County and a handful of other governmental entities. Without reforms, fully funding pension contributions for Chicago and its overlying taxing districts would require substantial revenue increases and/or expenditure cuts.

“To get a sense of the magnitude of the property tax increases necessary to move to full funding of annual pension payments, Nuveen Asset Management analyzed the 2013 property tax levies, pension payments and Annual Pension Costs (APC) for Chicago and its overlapping taxing districts as reported in their respective audited financial statements. We analyzed the tax bill of a theoretical $400,000 home in Chicago under current tax requirements and a scenario under which the city and its overlapping taxing districts all make full annual pension payments. The analysis does not include the impact of any specialized property tax exemptions like the homeowner’s exemption or the senior freeze exemption. All tax figures are from each entity’s 2013 fiscal year – the most recent fiscal year in common for all issuers.

“Based on our review of each government’s fiscal 2013 audited financial statements, the owner of a $400,000 home would have paid approximately $6,873 in property taxes. As was the case for Chicago, most of these government entities didn’t fully fund their pension payments, therefore maintaining property taxes at levels below where they otherwise should be. Chicago would need to increase its portion of the property tax levy 155.6% to make a full pension contribution and Cook County would need to increase its portion of the levy by 60.8%.

“Altogether, the owner of a $400,000 home in Chicago would need to pay $3,355 in additional property taxes to support full annual pension contributions – increasing the tax bill to $10,228 for a single year jump of nearly 49%. While home rule entities in Illinois, including the City of Chicago, are not subject to state imposed property tax caps, some overlapping tax districts such as Chicago Public Schools are limited to an increase of the lesser of 5% or the change in inflation.”

Personally, I hope they do it. I seriously hope they raise property taxes in Chicago by 50% in one fell swoop. Watch the exodus.

It would give the pundits something actually interesting to talk about instead of the weak sauce I’ve been waking up to lately.

And again, even if the taxes do go up, no one on the progressive left will describe the current or future pensioners of Chicago as “greedy”. Even though that is exactly what they are. Stealing from the tax payer for something they paid very little into. If there were anything resembling actual justice in this world, the city would go back and find the records of payments into the coffers and payments out, figure out what everyone paid into the system, double it and then end payments to that individual or “survivor”.

Getting 200% of what you paid is kind of difficult to whine about in the media, don’t you think? Especially when it can be shown that you’re stealing directly out of a child’s hand to put gas in your Lexus?

RNS Quote of the Day: 05/11/15

Weird Dave from the AoSHQ posted this up about last week about Assurant Health losing between $80-90 Million via ObamaCare in 2014.

The takeaway from this, the canary in the coalmine, is that a Fortune 500 insurance company, one that’s been around since the 19th century, tried to play within ACA rules and utterly failed. There’s going to be more of this. Major carriers are currently protected from loss by the risk corridor guarantees in the ACA (to simplify mightily, the Feds are covering their losses for the first 3 years), but that goes away by 2017, and we are going to see rate spikes and contracting networks that will make today seem like the good old days. Gonna see more companies fail, too. Isn’t that a nice inauguration gift JEF’s leaving for his successor?

And what will be the response from the left? “This isn’t working! The free-market failed! (Never mind that it did no such thing) We need single-payor!”. And if Hildabeast, or Lieawatha, or Tommy Carcetti or the Catamount Communist or any other Dem is elected President, we’ll get it too.

As was the plan all along.

Ayup.

If understanding irony were brain cells

He wouldn’t have two of them to rub together.

Al Sharpton tonight weighed in on the debate over the “Draw Mohammed” contest and free speech, mostly calling for religious and cultural “respect” for people’s differences.

He clarified that there’s never an excuse for violence and the group run by Pamela Geller absolutely “had the right to do so,” but argued “just because you have the right to do something doesn’t mean you should.”

This is the man who makes a living doing things he has a right to do, but shouldn’t. A goodly portion of his profit margin comes from not doing the things he should do, like paying his taxes.

Getting back in the swing of things

Quite literally, I walked through the door having just gotten done driving home from Boomershoot on Monday within moments of the shooting in Garland, TX hitting the cable news networks.

When I heard what kind of event was going on there and saw the scene on the teevee, I immediately thought of something along these lines.

11188306

And I also knew the reaction from the leftists and the media (but I repeat myself).

Likewise, I knew that a small handful of muslim “leaders” would decry the deeds of their fellow zealots, AND that a larger number of muslim “leaders” would bitch and moan about having to publicly decry the deeds of their fellow zealots.

Lastly, I also knew that the leftosphere would go nuts talking about how just because a couple of right-wing whacko’s who happen to follow Islam shot at some people, the entire religion shouldn’t have to face the wrath for it.

Fair enough, I guess. Except that on more than one “progressive” site, this story was featured very near the posts stating that grouping similar people together in groups was a “bad thing”.

Long story short, someone shoots at a parked car for double parking, hitting a child inside. Leftosphere reaction: All firearms should be heavily regulated/banned bacuase someone with one did something bad.

Remember when Glenn Reynolds was accused of Puppycide?

Well, this is kind of like that, except not.

I’ve got some pics to share, though not as many as I told myself I would take (again!).

But first, some video.

The Boomershoot 2015 Opening Fireball in slow motion.

Careful eyes will notice the bullet pass through out the back, bringing some gasoline with it. Also, the camera shake when the shock wave hits.
