RNS Quote of the Day: 10/04/10

Via The Classic Liberal, we learn of the passing of the writer, Joseph Sobran

Politicians never accuse you of ‘greed’ for wanting other people’s money, only for wanting to keep your own money.

Because they haven’t harmed the auto industry enough

They now want to one-up California on fuel standards

The Obama administration on Friday is expected to suggest nearly doubling fuel economy goals for new cars and light trucks — possibly to more than 60 miles per gallon by 2025.

Under orders from the White House, the Environmental Protection Agency and Transportation Department have been working for several months on the next phase of gas mileage standards for motor vehicles built between 2017 and 2025.

Auto industry and environmental sources say the agencies will suggest rules improving fuel economy between 3 percent and 6 percent per year. Environmental groups are urging the administration to ultimately set the annual increase at 6 percent, which would force the national fleet average beyond 60 miles per gallon in 15 years.

A 3 percent annual increase would hit around 46 mpg by 2025.

Under Bush, Ford made the Mustang look like the Mustangs of old. Chevy brought back the Camaro.

Under Obama, Ford will be reintroducing the Pinto and Chevy the Vega.

Is that “Hope”, “Change” or just “Progress”?

This is a fantastic idea

It should be a constitutional amendment to require the government to provide every taxpaying household one of these.

Hey Cop

If you shoot my arthritic, friendly, unthreatening dog for no damn good reason, expressing how contrite you are because, gosh, you’re a dog owner yourself does nothing but give me a target.

For those who don’t know, this particular area of Oakland is a very nice, upscale neighborhood. For a cop to react to this sweet old lab in that environment as though she were a crackhouse-trained attack rottie or pit bull is so outrageous that I’d expect the local PETA terrorists to get off their asses and firebomb Victor Garcia’s house if they had any balls.

No wonder the good cops don’t expose the bad ones

They get destroyed when they do.

The whole department leadership should be fired and stripped of any right to work in law enforcement again.

Childhood Epiphany

Breda’s post reminded me that I was all of five years old when I had my first epiphany, though I didn’t learn the word until encountering James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in my teens.

The epiphany was that “Maria” of Sesame Street (played by Sonia Manzano) was exotically hot. Again, I was five. She was only three years into her tenure on the show at that time; young and smokin.’ I didn’t know what to do with those feelings until a bit later, but it sure made the show fun to watch while I figured it out!

My informal survey of fellow males over the years has elicited similar admissions of Maria being The Woman who awakened our awareness of females as objects of attraction/obsession, and in all cases it was at ages well before puberty was the ghost of an idea in our biochemistry.

They had her wearing those breast-clinging tops and tight jeans on purpose, I tell ya! Thanks, Sesame Street!
