In fact, not only do audiences not run me out of the lecture halls, they get excited about oil production, and a little bit upset that they never learned this anywhere else. For example, most people are blown away when I point out how much of whatever room I’m lecturing in is made of oil–the insulation in the walls that kept us warm, the plastics in their electronics, the (synthetic) rubber in their shoes, the makeup on their faces, the glasses or contacts on their eyes, the paint on the walls, and so on. They’re excited because this stuff is genuinely exciting, and because we are never taught it.
Yesterday my daughter graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a Masters’ in Education. We celebrated with a bunch of meat over a fire.
This is goat meat from a goat our soon-to-be son-in-law (above) slaughtered in the primitive living skills class he teaches.
The last class had a large number of young children attending. Apparently they are unfazed by watching a goat they just nuzzled and petted scream and bleed out for ten minutes, where the adults tend to either be traumatized into sobbing wrecks or go the other direction and gush about how mystical and beautiful it is.
For my part, while I like the idea of exposing folks to the reality of meat processing, I also come from a family of hunters who restrict themselves to head shots so the animal doesn’t suffer.
The goat was damned tasty, though. And not tough at all. Hmm…
I found this gem over in the comments at weerdworld.
The young guy that runs the burger stand is one of the most reasoned young men I have heard in a long time! Not because he is black, or from South LA…but because he knows that hard work pays off and that the overseers have never had a fucking real job in their lives!
The man responsible for the most entertaining 5+ minutes of talking head television in the 21st century, and possibly in its history, is leaving his home network.
Dylan Ratigan, the opinionated and sometimes hotheaded television host, is leaving MSNBC, the cable channel where he has worked for the last three years.
Mr. Ratigan, whose news analysis show is now broadcast at 4 p.m. Eastern time, said in a telephone interview that he was electing to leave cable so that he could put into practice what he has talked about on TV. Mr. Ratigan has attacked political systems, corporations and special interests on his show and promoted movements for job creation, bank reform and campaign finance reform in the past.
If you didn’t see it or don’t remember, here is the video. The award winning part comes in at around the 4:00 mark. But do watch the whole thing.
I’d lay money down that both those women leaked a little bit at the 5:46 mark, and would take a side bet on the dude too.
Ya know the stare from the one dollar bill? Yeah, that one.
Alexander Hamilton once offered to buy Gouverneur Morris dinner if he would clap Washington on the shoulder and say how great it was to see him again. When Morris complied, Washington simply, and without a word, removed Morris’ hand from the sleeve of his coat and froze him with a stare.
His panelists brought up the “societal damage” and “public healthcare costs” of sugary drinks while patting themselves on the backs for agreeing with the law. They already believe that your body is the government’s property and responsibility, so no sweets for you lest the government has to pay for it.
If you take a look at the panel, it is very likely that at least half of the people on it complain about police interactions with male members of the black community or the black community in general, at least every week. Yet they are giving a thumbs up to giving the police more reason to interact with members of the black community. Do they not see the connection?
And I guarantee you that each and every one of the panelists wholeheartedly agrees that it is the Tea Party and/or people such as myself, that think it is better for people to make their own life-decisions, who are the biggest danger to society, not the nanny state’s mission creep into the personal food consumption habits of individuals.
About the only sensible thing they talk about is changing the food stamp program so that the purchaser can only buy things like vegetables, rice, flour, meat, etc. and no prepackaged or processed foods. And they don’t even come right out and say that, it is only wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Near the end of it they get a big chuckle over the idea that some people might not like the government taxing just soft drinks, fruit juices and sports drinks because of the sweeteners in them.
In this follow up video, they finally get around to flat out letting the viewer know that people are too stupid to know that they’re being “brainwashed” by big food corporations into wanting their products. I’m sorry, I know a handful of people are that dumb, but those people only vote Democrat and are also too stupid to know they were just insulted. However, when they’re trying to include me in that figure, I get slightly offended.
