About that Monolithic Media in Lockstep with the White House

Not so much. Why did Obama have to scramble to give his “Trayvon = Me” speech? Because the Latino press was having none of it:

The White House’s original plan — for Mr. Obama to address the verdict in brief interviews on Tuesday with four Spanish-language television networks — was foiled when none of them asked about it.

Instead, he appeared in the White House briefing room with no advance warning and little of the orchestration that usually accompanies presidential speeches.

Bwahahaha. The indignant New York Times made sure to leave that accusatory graf on the front page of Saturday’s paper. Ungrateful Latinos! Don’t you realize you’re Trayvon too? What’s with all these questions about jobs?

Incidentally, this precise sociopolitical fissure showed up in my family Facebook timeline, where those of my Central Valley relatives who identify as black were vocal and angry about Trayvon’s death, while the vast majority of the family, who identify as Latino, were very very silent about the matter.

Government Agents with Guns

I’m in NY this week (Long Island) & I’ve noticed that the fire marshals out here go about armed.

I have to wonder, how often are fire marshals getting into gun fights or other incidents where carrying a gun as part of the job is a called for?

Not that I object, but this is NY, where guns are bad, or something.

I’ll also note that I saw this while in a burger joint that was full. There were 5 armed men in there wearing blue trousers, a white shirt, and a patch on the sleeve that said Fire Marshal. Not exactly a complicated uniform to copy. No one questioned their legitimacy. No one freaked out.

Petition Calls for Zimmerman’s Concealed Carry License to be Revoked

More than 10,000 people have signed a petition calling on Florida officials to revoke the concealed carry permit of George Zimmerman, the man recently acquitted in the 2012 killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

The petition, hosted at Causes.com, suggests that Zimmerman’s background makes him unfit to carry a concealed weapon.

This, of course, follows multiple other petitions, including the one to the DOJ to try Zimmerman in federal court. That one got a million signatures and the DOJ has actually moved to illegally seize Zimmerman’s property for their investigation.

Mad Skillz

Watch and be amazed.

BTW, that bike weighs over 1/3 of a ton.

If the constabulary could fire their service pistols with that level of skill, I’d sleep slightly better.

Institutional Racism in the Deep South

It does exist!

The Alabama Federation of Republican Women (AFRW) strongly opposes “race-based standards for student achievement” pushed by the Alabama Department of Education, as reported in The Tuscaloosa News on Sunday, June 30. Minority students will be held to a lower standard, and would be tracked at a lower standard throughout their academic career from K-12.

According to this article by Jamon Smith, “Beginning this fall, Alabama public schools will be under a new state-created academic accountability system that sets different goals for students in math and reading based on their race, economic status, ability to speak English and disabilities.” Alabama’s Plan 2020 “sets a different standard for students in each of several subgroups — American Indian, Asian/Pacific islander, black, English language learners, Hispanic, multirace, poverty, special education and white.”

The “race-based” standards are part of Common Core, adopted by the state board of education in November 2010.

I wonder if The Reverend Al or Jessie “Race Hustler” Jackson will be protesting these new standards?
