Free Agent

So that’s it. I’m done with school (I do have another quarter scheduled in the fab shop for side projects) and am a member of the available workforce in the job market.

I have sent out nearly a dozen resumes (8 last Friday alone) and am hoping my phone is going to explode today. The cast comes off on Friday for those employers who won’t let me test with it on.

I was able to take a weld test for an employer on Thursday morning and should get a call from them today or tomorrow. There are, supposedly, 4 open positions there and ten people who tested for it. My welds were flawless and a couple of former students from my school that I know work there, so we’ll see.

Sadly, the timing for this new skill-set come at a bad time for my attendance at Boomershoot. I will be there, but my options for being there for the entire event are likely poor. I can’t see an employer letting me have three days off within a month of my start date, so expect a mid-day Saturday arrival with a haul ass exit time as things wind down on Sunday. I’m going to ask anyway. All they can do is say no.

In the mean time, wish me luck.

Congratulations on finishing the program – hope that your phone does indeed explode.

My buddy and I will be at Boomershoot again this year, after taking a couple of years off. Stop on by and say hi, if you’d like. We’ll be shooting an interesting assortment of gear this year, from .204 Ruger to .338 Lapua.

Congratulations! Good luck on finding a job, but I expect that skill has more to do with that…

‘cept it’s anything but luck. What you have is a skill.

I’ve enjoyed following your trip. Thanks for sharing. I’m sure you’ll do well.

Well, I’ve lurked and watched your saga from beginning to end…where you hopefully drive off into the sunset with a trunk full o’ cash from all the welding work.

Instead of sitting around and whining about your circumstances, you got off your butt and did something about it, and put in a LOT of hard work to get there. You’ve got every reason to be proud, and I hope you get to enjoy the success you’ve earned.

    Well done, sir.

Congrats. Wish I could do Boomershoot again but it is too far away to be practical, the first time with you, Kim and company is a find memory.

I have really enjoyed your posting about welding school and everything else.

Good luck in the job market you work hard and your prospective employers will recognize that.

I just started a new job too. But I asked that I be able to take the time off (without pay) for Boomershoot and they agreed. And the director of our group (my bosses’ boss) and her husband are now signed up to participate. She also offered to “pick up trash or whatever else we can do to help.” My boss says he can make the drive in 4.5 hours (going the speed limit it is 6 hours). My lead told his girlfriend, “We might be going to Idaho the first weekend of May”.

It’s great to work with like minded people.
