Sad times at Washington High

Head out of the fire and back to local politics.

I’ve mentioned in the past that the class has a heavy right-leaning political bent, so yesterday was quite the morning for wailing and gnashing of teeth over I-594 passing.

Being the resident “gun guy” I spent a goodly portion of the day responding to questions about it. Knowing this was likely to happen, I brought the printed verbage from my voter’s guide for easy reference.

While I was gentle, for the most part, I did chide those who said they didn’t actually get around to actually voting.

In better news, we can all hope that something like this happens next year

Voters approve right to bear arms state amendment

Alabama voters have approved a constitutional amendment to make gun ownership a fundamental right.

The measure called Amendment 3 won easily in statewide balloting Tuesday.

The Republican-backed amendment used language from the National Rifle Association.

The measure would make owning firearms a fundamental right in Alabama. It would also require that measures to control firearms would have to pass the toughest review by state courts.

Supporters say the amendment was needed to guard against overreaching gun control. Opponents say the proposal could lead to a dismantling of existing limits on gun possession and ownership.

Louisiana and Missouri have approved similar measures.

But then again, this is Washington. I have as much luck of that happening here as I do with a journalism correctly labeling gun rights opponents as “civil rights opponents”.
