Almost time to go shopping for a collector car

Not that I have the money at this time or anything. But I’m thinking something pre-1975 might be a good idea in the not too distant future.

Because coming to a country near you…

EU has secret plan for police to ‘remote stop’ cars

The European Union is secretly developing a “remote stopping” device to be fitted to all cars that would allow the police to disable vehicles at the flick of a switch from a control room.

Confidential documents from a committee of senior EU police officers, who hold their meetings in secret, have set out a plan entitled “remote stopping vehicles” as part of wider law enforcement surveillance and tracking measures.

“The project will work on a technological solution that can be a ‘build in standard’ for all cars that enter the European market,” said a restricted document.

The devices, which could be in all new cars by the end of the decade, would be activated by a police officer working from a computer screen in a central headquarters.

Once enabled the engine of a car used by a fugitive or other suspect would stop, the supply of fuel would be cut and the ignition switched off.

And by suspect, they mean anyone the guy at the switch doesn’t like. Or that guy’s boss doesn’t like. Or that guy’s boss’ boss. Et cetera.

I know it is a government plan, and that government plans take longer than expected. But I see them using this “six year plan” to also figure out how to retrofit this into current models and anything with an ECU and tying the installation to your registration renewal.

I knew there was a reason I was looking into CJ-7’s recently.

This not new. This idea has been around for awhile in the USA. It would not be long until people find a way to disconnect it.

The trick on this for the oppressors is to make it so the lack of one is detectable, too. I’d say that said oppressors won’t pull the trigger on it until it’s full-snitch capable. OnStar has this capability now.

BTW, it’s just as easy for the oppressors to make this device destructive, so that the command destroys the ECU and back-flashes all the engine control sensors and electric running gear. The law would simply say that the destruction is a civil forfeiture of the vehicle.

…and if you have your ’75 Jeep, the law will declare it an antique, suitable to be driven only in parades, etc. You can get “Antique Car” insurance now for $100/year if you follow those rules.

Which I why i specifically used the term “Collector Car”. In Washington, you can get “collector car” plates that never have to be tabbed. You are limited on mileage, but “officer, this car is more than 40 years old. How can you expect the odometer to work?” works in a pinch.
