It’s almost a tradition

Earlier this week the HR drones at my place of employ rang up the managers at the location I work at to tell us that around 90 employees needed to bring in their multiple forms of ID so as to fill in the ICE’s I-9 requirement.

I’ve been an employee there for nearly 11 years and know that this will be at least the fourth time I’ve had to produce these documents in that span of time. I mean, I am one for making sure that myself and all my fellow employees are legal to work in the country, but four times in just over a decade? Give me a break.

So, this time I am flat out going to ask the HR drone who in the department stole all the documents. I figure that will be nicer than accusing them of incompetence (aka: losing them), right? If the drone says that they were lost, then the negotiations begin for some employer purchased credit monitoring.

Is my employer the only one who is doing this, or are others getting hit with this? Bueller? Bueller?

They’re shredding them after verifying your legalness, dontchaknow. It’s For Your Protection.

Actually, that would be a good response, Mark.

That sort of data is pure platinum for identity theft, and HR personnel have the easiest access to it.

    Addendum:

Although I have to agree with Phil. Four times in 11 years? Someone’s not paying attention or properly sending forms through.

Might also be attributable to turnover/changes in state and local government reporting requirements. Every time some cubicle jockey has a wonderment and creates another new program, he/she/it drives new data collection requirements, independent of what the worker in the adjoining cubicle did last year.

Never heard of this. I had to prove citizenship during the hiring process (my Passport was deemed sufficient) – that was it.

Last year we went through a process of re-verifying everyone as we moved to an electronic system that was a result of a regulatory change. The interesting thing was that any manager could verify any employee (which is kind of necessary in my environment), no HR folks involved.

In my 13 yrs with the company this is the only time that this has occurred.

Had to do this when I got hired (bit over 6 months ago) but haven’t heard of it happening with frequency here.
