Some folks with awfully rose-colored glasses over there.
“Peaceful coexistence” as a 2nd-class citizen (or serf, or helot, or slave, call it what you like) under *any* autocratic ruler is suboptimal. The religious preference of the ruler in question is moot.
Some of what I read in the comments reminds me of a quote I heard long ago about the Antebellum South: “Dem darkies is a-workin’ in de fields and da massas be lubbin’ ev’y one of ’em.”
